Admission Requirements for South Carolina<br />
Certification Only:<br />
Applicants who hold a valid SC teaching certificate and a<br />
master’s degree with a minimum 3.25 GPA in a different area of<br />
professional education but wish to add administration certification<br />
must provide the following admission materials:<br />
1. An application form, along with appropriate nonrefundable<br />
application fee, must be returned to <strong>The</strong><br />
<strong>Citadel</strong> Graduate College (CGC) Bond Hall, Room 101.<br />
2. An official transcript directly from each accredited college<br />
or university attended - Bachelor’s through Master’s<br />
degree.<br />
3. A copy of valid South Carolina teaching certificate.<br />
4. Official scores of the Graduate Record Exam (GRE)—<br />
minimum score accepted is a verbal and quantitative<br />
combination of 900 or official scores of the Miller<br />
Analogies Test (MAT)—minimum score of 396, taken<br />
within the past five years.*<br />
5. A copy of a South Carolina Professional Certificate<br />
verifying three years teaching experience. At least one<br />
year of teaching at the appropriate level for Advanced<br />
Level certification for which the candidate is applying<br />
must be validated.<br />
R 43-64 REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION AT THE<br />
ADVANCED LEVEL<br />
I. ADMINISTRATION<br />
(A) Elementary School Principal and Supervisor<br />
(1) Master’s degree<br />
(2) Valid South Carolina Educator’s Professional<br />
Certificate at the elementary level<br />
(3) Minimum qualifying score(s) on the area<br />
examinations required by the State Board of<br />
Education<br />
(4) Verification of three years teaching experience,<br />
including at least one year of teaching in grades<br />
pre-K-8<br />
(5) Completion of an advanced program approved by<br />
the State Board of Education for the training of<br />
elementary principals and supervisors<br />

R 43-64 REQUIREMENTS FOR CERTIFICATION AT THE<br />
ADVANCED LEVEL<br />
I. ADMINISTRATION<br />
(B) Secondary School Principal and Supervisor<br />
(1) Master’s degree<br />
(2) Valid South Carolina Educator’s Professional<br />
Certificate at the secondary level<br />
(3) Minimum qualifying score(s) on the area<br />
examinations required by the State Board of<br />
Education<br />
(4) Verification of three years teaching experience,<br />
including at least one year of teaching in grades<br />
7-12<br />
(5) Completion of an advanced program approved by<br />
the State Board of Education for the training of<br />
secondary principals and supervisors<br />

Note: Courses taken prior to official admission or courses<br />
taken through other programs do not count toward the School<br />
Administration and Supervision program/degree without written<br />
approval from the Dean, School of Education.<br />
*<strong>The</strong> minimum acceptable score is as follows:<br />
1. Certification-Only - a score of 396 on the MAT or 900<br />
on the GRE<br />
a. Provisional Status - Candidates, who score between<br />
380 and 395, on the MAT or between 750 and 899<br />
on the GRE may apply for provisional status.<br />
Candidates, admitted under this provisional status,<br />
may enroll for only one semester of 6 hours and<br />
maintain a 3.5 GPA in order to be classified as a<br />
degree seeking or certification-only after completion of<br />
review by the department.<br />
b. Regular admission is granted upon completion<br />
of CGC requirements and respective program<br />
requirements.<br />
Program Requirements:<br />
A total of 39 semester hours must be completed for the M.Ed. in<br />
Educational Leadership. In addition to completing all courses,<br />
candidates applying for certification as an administrator must:<br />
1. Present a minimum qualifying score on the PRAXIS,<br />
South Carolina’s Supervision and Administration<br />
Examination, prior to enrolling in an internship.<br />
2. Present a Valid South Carolina Teaching Certificate that<br />
posts three years teaching experience including at least<br />
one year of teaching at the certification level requested.<br />
3. Complete Program Audit.<br />
4. Complete required courses, 33 hours and two internships<br />
(EDUC 661 and EDUC 662 or EDUC 663 and EDUC<br />
664), six hours (9-12 internship hours per week over a sixmonth<br />
period) for a total of 39 credit hours. Candidates<br />
for administrative internships must:<br />
(a) Complete 27 credit hours prior to submitting an<br />
internship application for faculty review.<br />
(b) Earn a passing score on the PRAXIS, South<br />
Carolina’s Supervision and Administration<br />
Examination.<br />
(c) Meet with advisor to review request for admission to<br />
an internship<br />
(d) Apply in person or via fax to CGC to register for an<br />
internship<br />
Applicants for fall administrative internships should file<br />
an application with their advisor no later than August<br />
1 of the preceding semester. Applicants for spring<br />
administrative internships should file an application with<br />
their advisor no later than December 1 of the preceding<br />
semester. Applicants for summer administrative<br />
internships should file an application with their advisor<br />
no later than March 1 of the preceding semester. In<br />
order to register for internships, authorized applications<br />
must be on file in the CGC office, along with the valid<br />
South Carolina state administrator’s examination score.<br />
