2. Executive
Summary
This is Newcastle’s first ever stand alone domestic
violence strategy, effective from September 2006
to March 2008.
The strategy has been developed by the Newcastle
Domestic Violence and Abuse Partnership
(NDVAP), which brings together all key agencies
who provide services and responses to victims
of domestic violence.
All agencies included in the partnership are
committed to working pro-actively to safeguard
adults and children and indeed whole communities
from harm due to domestic violence.
The partnership believes that multi-agency
working is the most effective way to prevent
domestic violence occurring and to reduce the
impact on victims and their children.
This strategy identifies and outlines the actions to
be undertaken by the Newcastle Domestic Violence
and Abuse Partnership in order to improve services
for all victims of domestic violence regardless of
age, gender, race, colour, nationality or ethnic origin,
disability, faith, marital status, family circumstances,
sexual orientation or class.
Our priorities are organised into 3 main challenges:
• Prevention
• Protection
• Provision
Prevention:
Domestic violence is a serious and pervasive
human right issue. Our aim is to work towards a
future in which all forms of domestic violence are
considered unacceptable.
Protection:
Domestic violence is both a social and, in some cases
criminal problem. Our aim is to safeguard victims
by increasing their choices and improving both the
civil and criminal justice systems in Newcastle.
Provision:
Domestic violence affects everyone. Services
and responses need therefore to be appropriate
for all victims.
