Powering the Racing Dreams of
03 Today’s Youth
In the realm of motorsports, instilling a challenging spirit to
overcome any obstacle and igniting the racing passion of the
next generation are equally as important to Honda as striving
to finish first.
And what better way to do both then to give students an
exclusive ‘behind the scene’ sneak peek at how the Honda
Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) prepared for this year’s
Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race – a gruelling race
that lasts 12 hours.
On 4 August 2009, 40 students and lecturers from The
Otomotif College (TOC) received this rare opportunity. Upon their
arrival at the Honda Malaysia Alor Gajah assembly plant, HMRT
Assistant Coordinator En. Rosidan Haron welcomed the visitors
by giving them a quick introduction of the HMRT. This was
followed by first-hand accounts of six senior HMRT members
who shared their personal experiences of being in the team.
The highlight of the experience came when the students were
invited to witness how the HMRT conducted checks and
tweaked Race Car 27, Honda Malaysia’s entry for this year’s
MME race. The students were also shown how a quality Honda
car is assembled in the plant – from the first parts in the engine
right up to the finishing coat of paint on a car’s chassis.
“One of my dreams was to see how a car assembly plant
functions and the steps taken to build a great car. I also feel very
fortunate to be able to catch a glimpse of the HMRT Race Car 27
and have learnt a lot from my interaction with the HMRT
members,” said 20-year-old student Fernandez Francis Zavier.
When asked about the students’ visit, Honda Malaysia
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Toru Takahashi
commented he was delighted to educate and share
knowledge with the young.
Describing the students as a group of energetic and
enthusiastic youths, Mr. Takahashi added that he was glad to
show them the ins and outs of the HMRT and how a Honda car
is produced. All in the hope of imparting to these students the
value of excellence in every small detail of work in order to
deliver a product of the highest quality.
“After all, one of these bright young lads may grow up
to be Malaysia’s top automotive designer or engineer,”
said Mr. Takahashi.
