message from
Honda Malaysia
To Excel is to Have ‘Kaizen’
A WARM WELCOME to our readers. Let me start by extending my sincere thanks to all customers for your
continued support even during these challenging times. Here at Honda, we believe in providing you with the best
quality service and best value always.
During the course of my two-year tenure at Honda Malaysia, I realised that ‘Kaizen’ – the never-ending determination
to improve oneself – is a quality deeply embedded in the very foundation of this company. This belief extends to a micro
level with all Honda Malaysia associates strongly encouraged to voice their suggestions on how to improve the organisation.
After all, helping each individual associate realise his or her full potential empowers Honda to harness the
Power of Dreams to achieve its dream of better satisfying customer needs.
Flipping through the pages of this issue of With Dreams, you’ll discover Honda Malaysia has plenty to be excited
about. Firstly, the launch of the latest Honda City last December marks a major milestone in Honda Malaysia’s
history as all models of Honda cars now come available with the i-VTEC engine, an engineering marvel that marries
impressive performance with good fuel economy.
Secondly, the Tech Challenge skills competition, held since 2006 as part of Honda Malaysia’s efforts to ensure high
service standards, has been expanded this year to include Sales Advisors and Customer Relations Executives so as to
provide customers with a totally satisfying experience.
The competency of Honda Malaysia associates in motorsports was also further strengthened when we once
again fielded an all-local Honda Malaysia Racing Team during the most recent Merdeka Millennium race – making it
an all-Malaysian HMRT for two years running.
Last but not least, I would like to take this opportunity to personally thank both Miss Ooi Yin Lu and Miss Wenny Ooi
for taking time off their busy schedules to share with our readers the satisfying experience they have with their
Honda cars and the great service they enjoy with their favourite Honda 3S dealer, Formula Venture Sdn. Bhd.
Allow me to conclude by assuring you that Honda Malaysia is never resting on its laurels. We’re always
brainstorming new and innovative ways of how to better serve and support you – our valued customers – and enhance
your Joy of Buying. And we do it in hope of forging a strong, long-lasting relationship with you.
Best Regards,
Mr. Rohime Shafie
President and Chief Operating Officer of Honda Malaysia
our newest dream
Passion • Quality • Challenge • The theme words for Honda Malaysia's Tech
Challenge 2009 – held on 15 August 2009 at its Training Centre, located in Honda
Malaysia's Pegoh assembly plant in Malacca – are also the three qualities that
every Honda associate need when providing the ultimate in customer satisfaction.
04
TECH CHALLENGE is a standing
testimony to Honda Malaysia’s
continued efforts to boost customers’
satisfaction levels and live up to Honda’s
core purpose.
Aimed at creating joys by motivation,
the Tech Challenge competition hopes
to deliver greater
enjoyment to the
customer (The Joy of
Buying) and fill Honda
associates with the
pride and readiness to
by Motivation
serve customers with
high-quality sales and after-sales
service (The Joy of Selling). Armed
with this pride and readiness, Honda
Malaysia associates will then be
motivated to improve their skills and
knowledge further (The Joy of Creating).
As the joy in anything can only
be achieved with teamwork, Tech
Challenge is designed to inculcate
quality professionalism through passion
and the spirit of challenge. Contestants
who reach the finals, come together to
pit their skills and knowledge against
each other, and do so according to
Honda Malaysia’s standard guidelines.
The challenge was introduced in
2006 and since then, many lessons
have been learnt from this competitive
event. It aimed to improve the skills and
knowledge of Honda dealers' service
technicians, and has developed year
after year to include more categories.
In 2006, Tech Challenge began
with only Technician/Foreman. But in
2007, the competition grew to include
Service Advisor and Parts Controller
category, followed by the introduction
of Body & Paint Repair Technician
category a year later.
This year however, new challenges
were added to complete the customers’
total ownership experience at all
authorised Honda dealers. Categories
for Sales Advisor and Customer
Relations Executive were introduced for
the first time, while the Parts Controller
category was expanded to encompass
inventory control as well.
The contests are held in stages. The
first stage, in-house selection, involves
the conducting of tests by dealership
service and sales managers before
contestants are chosen to qualify for
the regional challenge. Virtually all
categories of the competition adopt
this criteria with the exception of the
Customer Relations Executive and
Parts Controller categories, where
participants are nominated by
Service Managers.
From the initial stage of over 1600
dealers’ personnel, only a handful of 36
are shortlisted to represent their
regions, namely North, South, Central,
East Coast and East Malaysia to
compete in the Final Contest held on 15
August 2009 at the Honda Malaysia
Training Centre in Malacca.
In the true spirit of challenge, all
finalists gathered as early as 7.30am
on the day of the finals to register and
receive a briefing from the chief judges
for each category. Following a quick
introduction, Honda Malaysia Managing
Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr.
Toru Takahashi proceeded to launch the
event. The look of anticipation could be
seen on the faces of all finalists. Those
new to the challenge were extremely
nervous while those who had competed
before, were brimming with determination
and confidence.

Categories of Tech Challenge 2009 Competition
TECHNICIAN / FOREMAN
Technicians and foremen are tested in two areas for the competition: Workbench and Shop Floor. For the workbench contest,
each finalist’s measuring skills are tested not just for accuracy but for consistency as well, while the shop floor exercise sees
finalists demonstrating their competency in diagnosing and troubleshooting
vehicle faults.
WORKBENCH
• Five sets of equipments are allocated to each workbench for every finalist with each test
lasting 15mins. Finalists are judged based on the accuracy and consistency of their
measuring skills.
SHOP FLOOR (DIAGNOSIS)
• Each finalist is provided with a faulty car and worksheet to properly record their
diagnosis/troubleshooting results.
• Finalists must record all concerns, causes and corrective measures on the
worksheet provided.
• All diagnostic steps must be performed in accordance with the official service manual.
The goal is to have a technician/foreman successfully start the car, accompanied by
a proper record of all diagnosis/troubleshooting results.
A Service Advisor needs to be attentive
towards customers’ concern and
exemplify proper scheduling and job
allocation skills.
SERVICE ADVISOR
The competition for Service Advisors is made up of two components. The main component, which is the Standard
Service Transaction (SST) that awards high scores to a finalists for impeccable service offered to customers, and Job
Control Board (JCB), which values superb job assignment nt and time allocation skills.
PARTS CONTROLLER
Accurate measurement skills forms the basis to
proper diagnosing and troubleshooting of vehicles.
For the finals, competing Parts Controllers are tested based on two separate areas: System Practice and Shop Floor practice.
These areas are critical to a dealer's success as its ability to offer quality service often requires efficient spare parts management.
SYSTEM PRACTICE
Proficiency in Inventory Control and Receiving Activities (how incoming stock is managed and stored) form the core of System Practice.
• For this test, a finalist must accurately record all results of completed tasks so as to be able to gauge his or her level of
understanding, ability and overall skills in accordance to Honda Malaysia Parts Standard Guideline.
SHOP FLOOR PRACTICE
In the shop floor contest, participants are expected to demonstrate their competency in managing
and operating a storage area in four key areas: Rack Preparation, Location Labelling, Outgoing
Activities and handling of Dead Stock. Beginning with Rack Preparation, which is essential to
a dealer’s success since growth of the parts business means expanded storage space, a
well-managed Rack Preparation holds key to meeting a dealer's storage requirement. Next, a
properly labelled storage expedites stock tracking to reduce parts packing time, while
Outgoing Activities ensure proper documentation of all outgoing parts, and the efficient handling of
Dead Stock optimises storage area use.
• All finalists need to complete a practical test with tools/facilities based on work tasks provided.
• Finalists are judged based on their management and operation skills of the storage area
according to the parts standard guidelines and spare parts implementation activities.
our newest dream
JOB CONTROL BOARD
The Job Control Board (JCB) contest focuses primarily on job assignment and time
management skills of Service Advisors.
• A system of scheduling and assigning jobs to appropriate technicians that maximises
productivity and manage workshop capacity.
• Proper plotting of control checkers and skillfully managed job allocation will win the contestant
a stellar performance. All results of completed tasks are displayed on the JCB provided.
STANDARD SERVICE TRANSACTION
The Standard Service Transaction (SST) contest puts the Service Advisor’s customer handling skills
to the test. Not only must he or she adhere to the standard procedure according to the standard
service transaction when attending to customers, incorporating necessary interpersonal skills is also
mandatory to ensure a high-level of customer satisfaction.
• Test consists of Reception, Additional Job Follow-Up and Active Delivery subcategories.
• Contestants must record all customer requests and responses on the worksheet provided.
To be a good Parts Controller, efficient spare parts
management is essential, including a keen eye for defects.
Body & Paint Technicians take extra care to ensure that the car's
exterior impresses as well as its engine under the hood.
SALES ADVISOR
The Quality Delivery System (QDS) contest consists of exercises in pre-delivery, delivery and post-delivery processes.
Designed to test a Sales Advisor's knowledge of QDS and customer interaction skills, not only will he or she be judged
according to presentation skills and manner of interaction with customers, but the Sales Advisor must also adhere to the
standard procedures according to the QDS flow when attending to customers and incorporate the necessary
interpersonal skills – all to ensure that a customer has the most enjoyable experience possible.
Every impression counts, that is why Sales Advisors conduct
one final vehicle inspection prior to the arrival of the customer.
PRE-DELIVERY PROCESS
• Test a Sales Advisor’s ability to troubleshoot and ensure that a vehicle is in proper
delivery condition.
their ability to accurately record customer requests during appointment
handling and follow-up calls after service or repair, while maintaining good
interpersonal skills at all times. A good system of
follow-up enables dealers
to collect much needed feedback.
ROLE PLAY PRACTICE
• Demonstrate proper SST techniques of serving customers during appointment handling
and follow-up calls after service or repair.
• Record all customer requests and responses using the worksheet provided.
• Maintain good interpersonal skills and a friendly disposition at all times.
WRITTEN TEST
• Determines a contestant’s level of understanding in SST.
Sisters, Wenny (left) and Yin (right) don't just work together, they unwind together
too! Here, pictured ready to order a meal after a fun day of shopping.
PENANGITE SIBLINGS Ooi Yin Lu (Yin), 26 and Ooi Wan Nee
(Wenny), 30, have a relationship that goes beyond sisterhood,
and instead have one normally shared between best friends.
Beneath their distinct personalities and physical appearances
however, they reveal a likeness when it comes to their career,
interests, experiences and of course, their choice of rides.
Yin was the first to arrive for the morning interview, arriving
in her car, a Honda Accord. She doesn't appear to fit the
regular description of someone who would drive an Accord
because the car is clearly too large for her. It isn’t new but
looked clean and well maintained. As she positions her car
into the parking spot in front of the office at Formula Venture,
she struggles to look over the car’s bonnet to get a perfect fit.
Stepping out of her car, she wore make-up and clothes that fit
a personality going for a TV appearance rather than a typical
day at the office – no trace of the colourless and stereotypical
images of a finance manager. Smiling as she greeted us, it was
quite obvious that she has an outgoing disposition, a person
quite comfortable with meeting new people for the first time.
Wenny arrived about ten minutes later and if she didn’t
introduce herself, we wouldn’t have guessed that she is
Yin’s older sister. She has different facial features, and was
taller and more reserved. It took Wenny a while to warm up
to us as she patiently took her place beside Yin and smiled
as Yin continued with the conversation with animated
expressions and gestures. After a few moments, Wenny
joined in on the conversation and as a result, the interview
session grew livelier and introduced a deeper perspective into
their story.
Sharing the same workplace is no coincidence. They work
at Airmas, a property development company in Butterworth.
Their father has been with the company for a while now and they
both started work at the company not long after graduating
from Melbourne, Australia. Interestingly, the Hondas they drive
both carry registration numbers that may not have been
picked by chance. “One of the cars has a number that
signifies health and prosperity while the other carries a number
that matches the number of our home,” said Yin, a business
accounting graduate of Monash University.
According to them, the relationship with their father at
work is strictly professional – they reiterate the fact that they
get no favours or special privileges (the girls even have to don
the company’s pinstripe blazers for work, just like all other
frontline staff). “We call him dad at work but we never forget
that he’s also the boss,” said Wenny, an international business
graduate of Deakin University who holds the position of
marketing manager at Airmas.
The sisters may hold different job positions but we found
out even that doesn’t stop them from being together when it
comes to discharging their duties. They drive to Kuala Lumpur
frequently for work and leisure. Part of their work requires
them to travel to the nation’s capital at least once a month,
giving them the opportunity to mix business with pleasureas
they get to catch up with many of their friends there.
“We try to go down to KL as often as we can because most
of our friends are there,” said Wenny. As the materials for her
company’s showhouses are in Kuala Lumpur, they schedule
business trips normally on a weekday. “Weekends are for
friends,” added Yin with a cheeky grin. And when it comes to
travelling, they use far away excursions to do their shopping.
Wenny (right) and Yin (middle) like what they hear
about the latest Honda Accord 2.0 VTi-L from Sales
Manager Mr. Ooi Wei Ming (left).
Piston (Oil Rings, Piston Skirts,
Plateau Honing, Piston Oil Jets)
To minimise friction in the pistons for maximum
performance, Honda uses aluminum die-cast
pistons, ion-plated piston rings, low-friction
molydebenum coated piston skirts (a world’s first)
and plateau honing of cylinder walls to create a
smoother surface. Piston oil jets are also
incorporated to lubricate pistons efficiently for
powerful torque even during cruising.
Aluminium Lower Block
& Rocker Arms
The use of aluminum for the engine’s lower
block construction as well as rocker arms
provides for better rigidity and a more
compact and lightweight engine design.
This translates to better fuel-efficiency and
quieter engine performance.
A Powerful
Evolution
Even before the debut of i-VTEC, Honda has been committed to developing fuel-efficient engines since it
entered the automobile industry in 1963. From the unveiling of the CVCC in 1972 – the first engine in the
world to comply with the 1970 U.S. Clean Air Act emissions regulations – to the legendary VTEC that proved
a single internal combustion engine could offer both greater fuel-efficiency and power, and most recently the
revolutionary i-VTEC, which delivers world-leading efficiency, low emissions and impressive performance,
it’s no wonder Honda cars have always been and continue to be a pleasure to drive.
Before i-VTEC, there
were CVCC and VTEC.
On its unending quest to
develop the perfect
engine, Honda has over
the decades introduced
innovation after innovation,
each revolutionising the
way we drive. The CVCC
marked Honda’s first
breakthrough in engine
design, followed by the
truly inspiring VTEC.
From VTEC was born
i-VTEC, the next leap
forward that reaffirms
Honda’s position as a
global leader in automotive
technology. Here, we
trace the evolution of
the design of the
Honda engine.
1972
CVCC
Using Honda’s Low-Emission Engine Method
whereby the engine’s combustion process itself
produces lower emissions – eliminating the need
for a catalytic converter – the Compound Vortex
Controlled Combustion (CVCC) engine delivered
cleaner emissions and excellent fuel economy. In
2007, the CVCC was inducted into Japan’s
Mechanical Engineering Heritage as an important
contribution to the country’s development in the
field of mechanical engineering.
Providing further improvements in combustion efficiency and emission
reductions, a catalytic converter was incorporated into the CVCC design to
create the CVCC II engine.
VTEC
Prior to the introduction of the VTEC, cars could only be designed to be
either economical (with smaller valve openings) or performance-based
(with larger valve openings) as conventional engines employed the use
of only one cam. The VTEC solved this by utilising two cam profiles: a
lower cam for low and mid speeds, and a higher cam for high speeds,
making it possible for a single car to achieve both efficiency and power.
1991
Improving fuel consumption further with a lean burn, the highly productive
3-Stage VTEC uses swirling to promote more efficient air-and-fuel
mixing in the engine chambers. During low engine speeds, airflow is
restricted by deactivating one of the two intake valves, while at medium
and high-speed range, Practical Valve Timing Lift triggers operation of
both valves to open fully for maximum airflow.
The Next
Breakthrough
The turn of the 21st century signalled Honda’s next breakthrough in the evolution of VTEC technology with
the introduction of the i-VTEC engine. This sparked the development of the i-VTEC Injection System and
3-Stage i-VTEC with IMA hybrid system, eventually culminating with the launch of the first* V6 engine in the
world to feature three stages of cylinder deactivation – the i-VTEC with VCM. Proving once again that with
dreams and passion as its fuel, there is no challenge too big for Honda.
2006 1.8-litre i-VTEC Engine
Honda proves that an engine can be powerful, fuel-
efficient and clean running at the same time with the
i-VTEC ("i" for intelligent). By combining the ability of the
VTEC to electronically switch valve timing and valve lift to
match low and high-speed range, with Variable Timing
Control (VTC) technology that provides continuous phase
control of the intake valve according to engine load
rotation, the i-VTEC creates the ideal balance of high
power, fuel economy and effective emission control.
In addition, i-VTEC engines are rotated 180º from traditional
Honda engine layouts, bringing the exhaust manifold closer to
the catalyst for reduced emissions at start-up.
Also, instead of fielding two cars as in previous races, this year saw HMRT field only #27,
a Honda Civic Type R, in the Class A2 category.
optimised at two sessions, the first as an introduction for new members, while the second enhanced
synchronisation within the team.
16
Class A2 at the recent Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME)
race on 8 August 2009 – the team’s most impressive result
Hard work and strong determination paid off for the Honda
Malaysia Racing Team (HMRT) who grabbed second place in
since it began fielding an all-Malaysian team in 2008.
commemorate Malaysia’s Independence Day – horsepower counts for little if
there is no synergy between man (human capital) and machine (race car).
This year’s MME proved more challenging than previous years due to a splitting of race categories for the first time with
Classes O and A participating in the main race, while Classes B and C were moved into a separate race called the Sepang
1,000km Race, held before the main event. Following the split, Class A was further divided into two subcategories: Class A1
for two-seater cars and Class A2 for four-seater cars, increasing the number of participants as a whole. Only Class O
remained unchanged.
As if a revamp of categories wasn’t enough, a new Head and Neck Restraint System (HANS) used to safeguard drivers’
lives was also introduced in this year’s race. This not only meant a redesign of seats to accommodate the device, but
also precious seconds during a race would be lost as more time is needed for a race driver to exit the vehicle.
HMRT also implemented its own set of initiatives before this year’s race. First, only 14 of the HMRT’s 26
members were new while returning members would share their experience with newcomers. Plus, two
new positions were added to the team: the Pit Crew Coordinator, and Communications Set Controller,
creating more specialised responsibilities. Thirdly, the number of shakedowns for the HMRT was
such as the Merdeka Millennium Endurance (MME) race –
held yearly since 2000 at the Sepang International Circuit to
full potential of its associates, make it truly unique in the
world of motor sports. For a gruelling 12-hour endurance race
Racing flows through the veins of Honda’s existence. This
passion, together with Honda’s philosophy of harnessing the
“It’s easier to focus when it comes to one car,” said HMRT Team
Manager C.W. Loh. “This is part of the key learning that we (HMRT)
had last year. We have reverted back to synchronising an all-local
team on one car, to re-learn the whole process and fine tune the
organisation before expanding again,” he added.
Despite the difficulties adapting to changes in race regulations,
HMRT is no stranger to challenges, which is why Team Principal, Toru
Takahashi, expressed strong confidence in the team before the race
began,“I believe HMRT will continue to stand proud with their high
strength of mind and do their best in the race.”
With the team’s motto for the 2009 MME race as Rising to the
Challenge, there’s no denying that HMRT surpassed all expectations
this year, capturing its best result yet – second place in Class A2 –
within just two years of having gone all-local.
Growing from a team under the complete guidance and supervision
of the MUGEN team from Japan during its first MME, to becoming a
100 percent Malaysian team last year, Mr. Takahashi said, “This is
the ultimate objective of HMRT – to train and build up the skills of
local talents to thrive in the motorsports and automotive arena.”
Honda Malaysia’s participation in the MME for seven years has been
a driving force behind promoting The Challenging Spirit amongst its
associates, helping them to realise their full potential. By exposing
Honda Malaysia associates to the rigorous demands of an
international race such as MME, it improves their operational
autonomy and strengthens core work values that channel to better
work ethics and more efficient practices.
QUALIFYING ROUND
With the three drivers consistently clocking an average 2mins
25secs as the team’s best time Car #27 managed to qualify top of
Class A2, ahead of the other 19 cars that entered in the same
category. This allowed HMRT to be placed in 17th position, behind
the class A1 pole sitter. All three HMRT drivers were looking forward
to performing well come Race Day.
A ROARING START (MORNING)
8am – 9.15am - HMRT's buzzing around the pit, preparing for the race, with
technicians and tyre men doing last minute checks, while mechanics rehearse
refuelling. Most skip breakfast, too excited (and busy) to eat, preparing for the
rigorous 12-hour race ahead. Meanwhile, LCD screens are installed so the crew can
track the race from every angle.
10am - After a team-wide pep talk, HMRT's manager and MUGEN engineers brief
the drivers, before the all-important first engine start-up of the day. Engineers
monitor RPMs and temperature, check brakes and recalculate fuel levels,
repeating the start-up several times, until everything's perfect. #27 leaves the
pit just in time for photo ops with the drivers, team and race queens.
11.30am - Race Day kicks off as #27's Rueben Wong seizes the Class lead,
resisting strong challenges from rival cars at the very first corner.
11.45am – 12pm - Competition heats up, as rivals repeatedly challenge
Rueben's position. Pit crew and engineers scramble to analyse incoming
data before the all-important first pit stop. With the driving intense, the safety
car is deployed after several cars crash, and amid the chaos, #27 drops to
fourth place.
18

SURGING AHEAD (AFTERNOON)
12.30pm - The all-important first
pit stop, at lap 25, finishes in a
46-second flash. Rueben jumps
out as they refuel and change tyres,
and HMRT's second driver, Eddie
Lew, jumps in as #27 tears out of
the pit.
1pm - Pushing ahead, Eddie
snatches the lead! With #27
running smoothly and looking in
great shape, team members are
upbeat. Go HMRT!
2.54pm - This is the most
punishing point of the 12-hour
race, as fatigue seeps in.
Coupled with scorching 40ºC
weather, inside the pit's like an
oven, and conditions are even worse for drivers.
6.24pm - The weather cools as #27 takes a brief stop and refuels. By
this time, the HMRT is moving like clockwork. With no malfunctions,
#27's running well.
PUSHING
ON (NIGHT)
7.30pm – 7.34pm - Entering
the night leg, the crew takes
extra precautions prepping the
pit for further stops, as lights
are fully activated. #27 pulls
into the pit, the ability of the HMRT to smoothly handle night
stops speaks volumes to their proficiency.
10.13pm - Only 19mins since #27's last pit stop, some HMRT
members are catching a breather, gathering around Chief Mechanic
Irwan Abdul Hamid for a quick debrief of the previous stop, when
suddenly HMRT engineers are calling out to the pit crew. #27 drives
right into the service bay and is hoisted up.
10.15pm - As the crew buzzes around #27, the driver reports faulty
brakes as mechanics make furious repairs bleeding the brakes, while
onlookers watch the TV screens, waiting to see if anyone overtakes
HMRT. Just 7mins later, #27 roars out of the pit, propelled by sheer
determination.
10.50pm - Eddie Lew smashes HMRT
records clocking 2mins 26.929secs,
2mins 26.827secs and 2mins
26.637secs laps late in the race.
THE FINAL PUSH
11.04pm - The mood in
the pit's anxious as #27
makes its final stop.
HMRT can’t afford any
mistakes from here out, or
risk losing its hard-fought
dominance at second
place in Class A.
11.20pm - Eddie goes all-out and keeps narrowing the gap with the
first-place, clocking another 2mins 26sec lap very late in the race, but
unfortunately time's running short. At 11.30pm sharp, Eddie and
HMRT take second place in Class A2, just seconds behind the leader.
12am - The HMRT was presented with second place accolades.
Although the team failed to win first position, their challenging spirit
empowered them to achieve their best result yet. Congratulations
“The team has shown an exemplary dedication and
teamwork to overcome all obstacles during the arduous
12-hour race. This is a true display of Our Challenging Spirit.
We are sure the team has learnt greatly from this year’s race
and hope that they will transfer their experience and
knowledge to infuse the elements of continuous
WE TALK TO THE TEAM
Team Manager
C.W. Loh
“We had an extremely good race today,
except for the beginning of the race
where the car seemed unstable.
“But after the first pit stop, everything
went as scheduled again. And for the
entire time, the lap times were
consistent while the pit stops were
quick to make us competitive.
“However, about one hour before the race ended, the car
developed brake problems. It was unfortunate as this meant
that we lost some 10 minutes. By the time we got back in, it
wouldn’t have made a difference. All the driver, had to do was
to go flat-out till the end.
“Besides that, the race went perfectly. The team worked well,
the confidence levels were high. They wanted the victory.”
“We carried out 10 pit stops throughout the race, each
stint between pit stops took an average of 70 to 75
minutes. And to maximise our stops, we changed drivers,
refuelled and changed tyres all at one go.”
Engine Mechanic
D. Thayalakumaran
“The engine had been exceptional
throughout the race. We didn’t have
any concerns whatsoever for both
the engine and the 6-speed manual
gearbox.
“It was the same engine as in last
year’s race. It was the K20A Type R
engine.
“The overheating of the brakes was the only thing that
happened to the car.”
Chief Tyreman
M. Nurzaidi Abdul Musid
“The tyres are very important in an
endurance like this. First of all, we
have to know the tyres to be used in
advance.
“Everytime the tyres come off, we
need to clean the tyres of brake dust
and soot, take a temperature reading
for data purposes, before getting the
tyres replaced.
What’s
on Honda
For more news visit
www.honda.com.my today!
01
Come 1 September 2009, RON95 petrol will be the new standard
fuel at the fuel pump, priced at RM1.75 per litre. This government
initiative marks the phasing out of RON92 all together and the
removal of subsidies for RON97, positioning it as a premium fuel.
While many wonder if the use of RON95 petrol will
adversely affect their cars, Honda owners can rest assured
knowing that there will be no compromise on their vehicle’s
performance and efficiency as RON95 petrol exceeds the
minimum RON requirements (of 91) for virtually all Honda
models**. This ensures Honda drivers enjoy the same level of
power and efficiency that they’ve grown to love.
For those unfamiliar with the term, RON is short for Research
Octane Number, the measure of a fuel’s ability to resist igniting
prematurely inside the combustion chamber before the spark plug
fires. This self-igniting condition is known as engine knocking and
over time, can potentially damage the engine.
In addition to most Honda cars having a low RON requirement,
Honda owners can also take delight in knowing that their cars
02
RON95 is ‘A-OK’ for
Honda Cars!
come equipped with Knock Sensors. Upon detection of engine
knocking, these sensors automatically signal engine operation to
retard ignition timing. This eliminates the knocking but may result
in some loss of power.
Although the RON rating has been in use for quite some time,
many drivers are still unaware that using petrol with the highest
octane levels isn’t necessarily the best choice for a car as the
appropriate RON count for an engine depends on its compression
ratio – the higher the ratio, the higher the RON that’s needed.
Also, contrary to popular belief, mixing of fuel with different
RON values poses no danger of damaging an engine as long as
minimum RON requirements are met. However, as most petrol
companies include additives in their fuel, mixing different brands
may not ensure a vehicle’s optimum performance.
** For the Civic Type R, the use of RON97 fuel is recommended for optimum performance as
the testing for the Civic Type R was performed with RON100 fuel. Although the Civic Type R
can run on fuel as low as a RON91, the use of one with an octane count of less than 97 will
affect the vehicle’s performance. For owners of older Honda vehicles, please refer to the
owner’s manual for minimum RON requirement.
Honda surprises
the 10,000th 3rd Generation City owner
Ms. Phua (second from left) receiving her prize from Honda Malaysia Managing Director and
Chief Executive Officer Mr. Toru Takahashi (second from right), together with representatives
Little did Ms. Phua Bong Chin know, 10,000 was going to be a
Generation City, she was the star of a celebration thrown for her
by Honda Malaysia at Sumber Auto Sdn Bhd, the dealer where
Ms. Phua purchased her Honda from.
Pleasantly surprised, Ms. Phua happily received a token of
appreciation from Mr. Toru Takahashi, Managing Director and
Chief Executive Officer of Honda Malaysia.
“I've not been lucky in my entire life, not even in lucky draws
and I'm really happy to be the 10,000th City owner," said Ms.
Phua, who was especially delighted that she, together with her
husband, would be going off to a 3-day, 2-night escapade in
serene Pangkor Island, courtesy of Honda Malaysia.
Mr. Takahashi, on the other hand, was only too happy to be
giving this gift away. As he shared, "Honda is pleased to be a well
accepted brand in the country. In response to the overwhelming
support, we constantly innovate ways to show appreciation
towards our customers. This is but a humble initiative for us to
express our gratitude to their support."
Mr. Takahashi certainly had good reason to be thankful. In the
face of a declining market, Honda Malaysia still managed to
record a growth of about 22% during the first half of 2009. As of
June 2009, Honda registered a total sale of 20,479 units. The City
has done exceptionally well with the 10,000th milestone unit
recently crossed, now close to 11,000 units are on the road with
over 4,000 units still on backorder list.
To keep up with this overwhelming demand, the Honda
Malaysia Alor Gajah assembly plant recently increased production
of the City by 20% – running on full capacity with two 10-hour
shifts and occasional runtime during public holidays – to shorten
customer wait time.
Once again Honda Malaysia would like to thank its customers
for making the City a huge success.

Otomotif College (TOC) received this rare opportunity. Upon their
arrival at the Honda Malaysia Alor Gajah assembly plant, HMRT
Assistant Coordinator En. Rosidan Haron welcomed the visitors
by giving them a quick introduction of the HMRT. This was
followed by first-hand accounts of six senior HMRT members
who shared their personal experiences of being in the team.
The highlight of the experience came when the students were
invited to witness how the HMRT conducted checks and
tweaked Race Car 27, Honda Malaysia’s entry for this year’s
MME race. The students were also shown how a quality Honda
car is assembled in the plant – from the first parts in the engine
right up to the finishing coat of paint on a car’s chassis.
“One of my dreams was to see how a car assembly plant
functions and the steps taken to build a great car. I also feel very
fortunate to be able to catch a glimpse of the HMRT Race Car 27
and have learnt a lot from my interaction with the HMRT
members,” said 20-year-old student Fernandez Francis Zavier.
When asked about the students’ visit, Honda Malaysia
HMRT Assistant Coordinator En. Rosidan Haron (right)
plays tour guide for a day.
Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer Mr. Toru Takahashi
commented he was delighted to educate and share
knowledge with the young.
Describing the students as a group of energetic and
enthusiastic youths, Mr. Takahashi added that he was glad to
show them the ins and outs of the HMRT and how a Honda car
is produced. All in the hope of imparting to these students the
value of excellence in every small detail of work in order to
deliver a product of the highest quality.
“After all, one of these bright young lads may grow up
to be Malaysia’s top automotive designer or engineer,”
said Mr. Takahashi.
