PENANGITE SIBLINGS Ooi Yin Lu (Yin), 26 and Ooi Wan Nee (Wenny), 30, have a relationship that goes beyond sisterhood, and instead have one normally shared between best friends. Beneath their distinct personalities and physical appearances however, they reveal a likeness when it comes to their career, interests, experiences and of course, their choice of rides. Yin was the first to arrive for the morning interview, arriving in her car, a Honda Accord. She doesn't appear to fit the regular description of someone who would drive an Accord because the car is clearly too large for her. It isn’t new but looked clean and well maintained. As she positions her car into the parking spot in front of the office at Formula Venture, she struggles to look over the car’s bonnet to get a perfect fit. Stepping out of her car, she wore make-up and clothes that fit a personality going for a TV appearance rather than a typical day at the office – no trace of the colourless and stereotypical images of a finance manager. Smiling as she greeted us, it was quite obvious that she has an outgoing disposition, a person quite comfortable with meeting new people for the first time. Wenny arrived about ten minutes later and if she didn’t introduce herself, we wouldn’t have guessed that she is Yin’s older sister. She has different facial features, and was taller and more reserved. It took Wenny a while to warm up to us as she patiently took her place beside Yin and smiled as Yin continued with the conversation with animated expressions and gestures. After a few moments, Wenny joined in on the conversation and as a result, the interview session grew livelier and introduced a deeper perspective into their story. Sharing the same workplace is no coincidence. They work at Airmas, a property development company in Butterworth. Their father has been with the company for a while now and they both started work at the company not long after graduating from Melbourne, Australia. Interestingly, the Hondas they drive both carry registration numbers that may not have been picked by chance. “One of the cars has a number that signifies health and prosperity while the other carries a number that matches the number of our home,” said Yin, a business accounting graduate of Monash University. According to them, the relationship with their father at work is strictly professional – they reiterate the fact that they get no favours or special privileges (the girls even have to don the company’s pinstripe blazers for work, just like all other frontline staff). “We call him dad at work but we never forget that he’s also the boss,” said Wenny, an international business graduate of Deakin University who holds the position of marketing manager at Airmas. The sisters may hold different job positions but we found out even that doesn’t stop them from being together when it comes to discharging their duties. They drive to Kuala Lumpur frequently for work and leisure. Part of their work requires them to travel to the nation’s capital at least once a month, giving them the opportunity to mix business with pleasureas they get to catch up with many of their friends there. “We try to go down to KL as often as we can because most of our friends are there,” said Wenny. As the materials for her company’s showhouses are in Kuala Lumpur, they schedule business trips normally on a weekday. “Weekends are for friends,” added Yin with a cheeky grin. And when it comes to travelling, they use far away excursions to do their shopping.
