responded with three unanswered goals as Dickson notched his 39th and
40th goals of the year around a Nick Elsmo goal to give Delaware a 3-1
lead with 4:37 to play in the first quarter. Card would notch his first of the
game and 20th of the season with 1:04 to play in the period to close the
deficit to 3-2 after one quarter.
Dickson boosted the Blue Hens’ lead back to two at 4-2 with a man-up
goal, from Cahill, 53 seconds into the second quarter before Hofstra scored
unanswered goals by Ford, Bentz and freshman Adrian Sorichetti, in a
three minute span, to take a 5-4 lead. But the Blue Hens came right back
with sophomore Grant Kaleikau scoring his ninth of the year at the 6:58
mark and John Austin notching his ninth 37 seconds later to give UD a 6-5
advantage.
Hofstra’s high-scoring junior Jamie Lincoln tallied his 29th goal of the
year, from Card, with 4:03 to play in the half to tie the game before the
Blue Hens’ Chris Hichborn scored his eighth goal of the year less than a
minute later to give Delaware a 7-6 lead. It would be the Blue Hens last
lead of the contest as Bentz would score a man-up goal, from Card, with 27
seconds to play in the half, and Card would score his second of the game
and 21st of the year, from freshman face-off man John Antoniades, seven
seconds later to give the Pride an 8-7 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, Ford continued the Hofstra run with a man-up goal
from Card 30 seconds in and Card completed his third hat-trick of the
year seven minutes later, from Bentz, to boost the Pride lead to 10-7.
Sophomore Brad Loizeaux added his 13th of the season with 5:59 to play
in the third to give Hofstra the biggest lead of the game at 11-7. Dickson
would score his 42nd just 35 seconds before the end of the quarter to close
the Delaware gap to 11-8.
Hofstra senior Dan Stein gave the Pride a four-goal lead 2:34 into the
fourth quarter with his sixth goal of the year. The Blue Hens closed on
goals by Kevin Kaminski at the 6:38 mark and Dom Sebastian 21 seconds
later to close to 12-10. But Taylor Burns’ first goal of the season with two
seconds remaining was not enough as the Pride posted its fourth straight
victory over their longtime conference rivals. Hofstra now leads the series,
23-10.
The Pride outshot Delaware, 34-33, with the Blue Hens picking up 31
APRIL 17 AT PENN STATE:
Freshman Nick Dolik scored his third goal of the game 50 seconds into the
first overtime to give the Penn State Nittany Lions an 11-10 upset victory
over the 11th-ranked Hofstra Pride in a CAA contest at Jeffrey Field.
Dolik scored the winning goal on a twisting, running bounce shot from 12
yards out that beat Pride sophomore goalie Andrew Gvozden high over his
right shoulder. Penn State was led by sophomore Matthew Mackrides with
four goals, Dolik with three goals and one assist and freshman Kyle Van
Thoff with one goal and two assists. Redshirt freshman goalie Dave Baker
made eight saves in the Nittany Lions’ cage.
Hofstra was led by sophomore Kevin Ford with three goals, classmate Brad
Loizeaux with two goals and one assist, and junior Jamie Lincoln with two
goals. Gvozden made nine saves in the Pride goal.
The Nittany Lions jumped on the board first as Kyle Van Thof scored a
man-up goal just 2:03 into the contest. Bentz tied the game for the Pride
3:06 later with his 23rd goal of the season. Mackrides gave Penn State a
2-1 lead with 2:28 to play in the quarter with his 28th goal of the year.
Junior Jay Card then started a 6-0 run for Hofstra with just 47 seconds
remaining in the first that gave Hofstra a 7-2 lead before halftime. Card
notched his 23rd goal of the year, off a pass from Loizeaux to close out
the scoring in the first quarter and tie the game at 2-2. Lincoln tallied his
30th of the year 6:45 into the second to give Hofstra its first lead of the
game. Two minutes later Ford scored his 10th goal of the year, and Steven
DeNapoli scored Hofstra’s fourth unassisted goal of the game 13 second
later to boost the lead to 5-2. Ford would score a man-up goal, from Card,
with 3:51 to play in the half and Loizeaux notched his 14th goal of the
season 1:12 later to build the 7-2 advantage.
But the Nittany Lions did not lay down and went on their own 5-0 run,
starting with Mackrides scoring twice in the final 1:31 of the half to close
the gap to 7-4 at halftime. Mackrides tallied his fourth of the game, on a
man-up situation, from Chris Hogan, 4:19 into the third quarter to cut the
deficit to two. Nick Dolik scored his 14th of the season with 4:38 to play
in the quarter, from Van Thof before Hogan scored his 13th of the year 90
seconds later to tie the game at 7-7.
Loizeaux gave the Pride a short-lived 8-7 lead with his second of the game
and 15th of the season with 1:34 to play in the third before Dolik notched
his second of the contest with 12 seconds remaining to end three quarters
with the score tied at 8-8. The Pride ran into some hard luck in the period
firing three shots off the posts behind Baker.
