troublesome symptoms appeared, patients were treated with 200 �g <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>haled<br />

salbutamol. Subjects were asked to cough dur<strong>in</strong>g and after <strong>in</strong>halation, and sputum<br />

samples were collected <strong>in</strong> empty conta<strong>in</strong>ers. The more viscous parts <strong>of</strong> the samples<br />

were collected and mixed for air-dried smears which were sta<strong>in</strong>ed with eos<strong>in</strong> and<br />

methylene blue. Eos<strong>in</strong>ophilia was graded semi-quantitatively, on a scale from 0 to 4<br />

(Rytilä et al. 2002), as relative proportions <strong>of</strong> eos<strong>in</strong>ophils <strong>of</strong> all non-squamous cells: less<br />

than 1%, 1 to 5%, 6 to 10%, 11 to 50%, and >50%, respectively. In Study V, the cell<br />

proportion <strong>of</strong> grade 0 was determ<strong>in</strong>ed as 60 cells per slide). The result was expressed as the mean count <strong>of</strong> both eyes.<br />
