Control groups<br />

In study II, two control groups were matched demographically and cl<strong>in</strong>ically to the<br />

primary study group. Outpatients from our cl<strong>in</strong>ic with moderate-to-severe <strong>atopic</strong><br />

<strong>dermatitis</strong> who were undergo<strong>in</strong>g long-term <strong>in</strong>termittent treatment with topical<br />

corticosteroids, mostly <strong>of</strong> <strong>in</strong>termediate potency, comprised the conventional therapy<br />

group. In this group, a treatment period <strong>of</strong> two to three weeks was followed by at least a<br />

one-week period without treatment when cl<strong>in</strong>ically possible. Some <strong>of</strong> these patients<br />

received additional treatments such as ciclospor<strong>in</strong> (3 patients) and UV-light therapy (2<br />

patients). Twenty-seven healthy subjects with no known sk<strong>in</strong> or other diseases were<br />

used as controls represent<strong>in</strong>g normal sk<strong>in</strong>.<br />

In study III, a randomly selected group <strong>of</strong> 49 volunteer medical students or<br />

personnel <strong>of</strong> similar age but without AD or current airway symptoms were used as<br />

control subjects. Data on age, sex, smok<strong>in</strong>g status, atopy status by sk<strong>in</strong> prick tests<br />

(SPT), and medical history were collected from all subjects. Lung function tests were<br />

performed to all 49 and <strong>in</strong>duced sputum to a subgroup <strong>of</strong> 19 volunteer control subjects.<br />
