• Method <strong>of</strong> delivery <strong>of</strong> document by the publisher/vendor<br />
• Multiple use licence<br />
6.4.2 Other aspects<br />
• Duplicates should not normally be purchased, unless there is a likelihood <strong>of</strong><br />
heavy usage.<br />
• Paperbacks may be preferred unless the document is expected to be in<br />
heavy use or has a long term value.<br />
• Gifts are encouraged but accepted only if they meet the collection<br />
development requirements specified under the acquisitions policy.<br />
• Availability <strong>of</strong> electronic material<br />
6.5 Responsibility <strong>for</strong> collection development<br />
The ultimate responsibility <strong>for</strong> selection <strong>of</strong> resources lies with the librarian who<br />
takes into consideration overall priorities, such as availability <strong>of</strong> funds, user<br />
needs, relationship to specific projects, adequacy <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation resources in a<br />
particular subject area, likely use <strong>of</strong> documents and availability <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation<br />
resources in libraries in the region. The library builds its collection in close<br />
partnership with the clientele. On that basis the library staff and the members <strong>of</strong><br />
the library make recommendations <strong>for</strong> the purchase <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation resources.<br />
6.5.1 Tools <strong>for</strong> efficient collection development<br />
• Internet access to the catalogues <strong>of</strong> other relevant libraries, publishers, etc.<br />
• Participation in the mailing lists <strong>of</strong> all government, semi-government, and<br />
other agencies<br />
• E-mail alerts, newsletters and lists <strong>of</strong> new publications from relevant agencies<br />
and publishers<br />
• Mutual exchange <strong>of</strong> in<strong>for</strong>mation on new publications with other libraries in the<br />
same area<br />
• Frequent receipt <strong>of</strong> a list <strong>of</strong> the parent body’s new publications<br />
