pr<strong>of</strong>essional support. Increasingly, and depending upon the library, some <strong>of</strong><br />
these ancillary services are becoming fully integrated into the library’s services.<br />
9.6 Challenges <strong>for</strong> developing countries<br />
Even in developing countries, every attempt should be made to hire pr<strong>of</strong>essional<br />
librarians. Library associations can advocate that government libraries be<br />
pr<strong>of</strong>essionally staffed and can sponsor training that government librarians can<br />
attend.<br />
9.7 Conclusion<br />
Staff, at all levels, are the most important part <strong>of</strong> a library’s service. Their contact<br />
with users (and the back <strong>of</strong>fice support which frontline staff rely on), will<br />
determine how the library is perceived and valued by the organisation. They<br />
need to feel a key part <strong>of</strong> the organisation they serve, to be treated fairly, and to<br />
have their skills appreciated and nurtured.<br />
