*This is calculated based on the number of working days an officer
would have worked in 1 week –e.g. if an officer works 5 days, he will
be entitled to 5 working days of paternity leave.
Parent-care Leave
Student teachers may apply for up to 2 consecutive days of parentcare
leave per annum to care for their parents, including step-parents
and parents in-laws. Medical certification will not be required.
Compassionate Leave
Student teachers may apply for up to 3 consecutive days of
compassionate leave (per bereavement) for the bereavement of their
immediate family members. The family members include spouse,
siblings, parents (including step-parents and parents in-laws) and
children. Compassionate leave is to be consumed within one week
from the date of bereavement.
Application forms for full-pay unrecorded leave for the above
purposes can be obtained from NIE Portal at
http://nieportal.nie.edu.sg and should be submitted to MOE through
NIE at least 7 days in advance. A drop-box for leave applications is
located at the NIE Student Services Centre (NIE Student Hub, Level
1).
Part-Time Employment / Programme
Student teachers sponsored by the Ministry of Education are civil
servants by virtue of the fact that they are appointed as education
officers on salary terms. As a general rule, civil servants are not
allowed to take up any form of part-time employment or programmes
outside the service. As education officers and civil servants, student
teachers are advised not to take up part-time employment or
programmes while they are undergoing teacher-training.
