JUNE 30, 2011 KAPPA DELTA SORORITY VOLUME II
Welcome to the Wild West!
KDs journeyed to the wild West
for last night’s opening session of
the 59th National Convention.
Cactus and wagon wheels set the
stage, and the night opened with
a rodeo roper showing off his
lasso tricks. Minutes later, another
cowboy gave these directions to attendees: “Pardners,
stick your cell phones in your holsters, put your boots
up, tip back your cowboy hats, grab you a piece of
straw to chew on, and get ready to say ‘howdy’ to KD’s
Magnificent Seven.”
The reference was to the classic Western, “The Magnificent
Seven,” and clips from old Westerns played
on the big screens as attendees arrived in Convention
Hall. The National Council introductions placed each
member as the star in her own Western, with images
on the screens showing their personal journeys from
childhood to present day.
The last introduction said, “If John Wayne is the
‘Duke’ of Westerns, then this member of the Magnificent
Seven is the Duchess of Kappa Delta. Sittin’ tall
in the saddle, she has shown us time and again “How
the West Was Won” with her pioneer spirit, strong
leadership, good sense of humor and perseverance
along the great journey. Always ready to get back up
on the horse is National President Beth Martin Langford.”
Beth presented the biennnial State of the Sorority, an
overview of Kappa Delta’s membership, programs,
initiatives and values. The information was presented
in a lively video filled with photos of Kappa Deltas
from all walks of life.
Beth also addressed the convention, wrapping up her
comments with this message: “On every worthwhile
journey there are peaks and valleys. It is emerging
from the valleys we develop our character, test
and strengthen our faith, learn valuable lessons, and
strengthen Kappa Delta and ourselves. No journey
would be worth the trip if we didn’t stop from time to
time to appreciate how far we’ve come and to plan for
what’s down the road. National Convention gives us
this opportunity.”
The evening concluded with the recognition of two
extraordinary groups of Kappa Deltas - the Order of
the Emerald and the Corre Anding Stegall Collegiate
Leadership Award winners. Their names are listed on
page 2 of this issue of the Katydid.

Order of the Emerald
The prestigious Order of the Emerald award was
presented last night to alumnae who have displayed
extraordinary service to an alumnae chapter, chapter
advisory board, house corporation, Panhellenic
or national Kappa Delta. Nominated by fellow KDs,
the recipients have exhibited selfless devotion to the

Corre Anding Stegall
Collegiate Leadership Award
The Corre Anding Stegall Collegiate Leadership
Award was established in 1989 to recognize collegians
who have demonstrated exemplary performance
based on campus leadership, Kappa Delta service and
scholarship. Named after former National President
Corre Stegall, these awards are the highest individual
honor that Kappa Delta gives to undergraduate
members. We are happy to congratulate the following

Omega Xi chapter purchased white
roses for everyone in their chapter
and CAB —a total of 112 roses,
$560 in donations for the Kappa
Delta Foundation! They plan to
take the white roses back to their
chapter and display them during
recruitment as a conversation
topic.

Emeralds, diamonds and pearls,
oh my! The KD Foundation table
has a beautiful selection of jewelry
that will go to some lucky KDs
who participate in the Foundation
raffle. There also are Coach purses,
Vera Bradley items and a beautiful
handmade KD quilt. Tickets are $5
each or six tickets for $25. Ticket
purchases do not count toward
cumulative gift-giving.

Baskets
A convention
tradition, sunshine

collect donations
for Children’s Hospital. The baskets
will be passed tomorrow during the
Foundation breakfast that begins at
8:30 a.m. Checks will be accepted.

A Candidates Forum will be held
during the second business session,
which begins at 2:15 p.m. in
Convention Hall.
Only a registered delegate may
vote. The polls will be open from
4:30 p.m. - 7 p.m. in Executive
Board 1 and will reopen from 10:30
p.m. - 11 p.m.
Installation of the 2011-2013 National
Council will be held tomorrow,
July 1, during the third business
session that opens at 4:30 p.m.
