There are lots of things which set Rutherford Hill apart, and the distinction and array of wine varietals are most certainly two of them. The winery was founded forty years ago by grape growers in order to produce “Quality as a way of life,” as one of the winery’s oft-stated phrases puts it best. In addition to benchmark releases of Cabernet Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Merlot and Rosé, coming to the tasting room provides the only 32 opportunity to taste and purchase a wide range of limited production wines, including Cabernet Franc, a Rutherford Cabernet Sauvignon, Malbec, Petit Verdot, Sangiovese, Sauvignon Blanc, Syrah, a Winemaker’s Blend and a Zinfandel Port. The winery’s state-of-the-art “winery-within-a-winery” allows for the production of these limited releases, letting its winemakers stretch their legs a bit and use the new ideas and techniques developed on the winery’s larger production wines. Part of the distinction in winemaking practices is the extent of the cave complex the winery has built. The cave tour and tasting show, as well, the degree to which wine education is integrated into all aspects of the winery experience for guests. As hosts guide visitors throughout the cave system, they receive an understanding of the way its design is reflected in the finished wines produced from within it. Enjoy the sights and taste fantastic wines on this well explained subterranean journey. As tasting room manager, Richard Hurwitz said, “You’ve had a great experience and you’ve been creatively educated about what we do.” For those wanting an even more intimate discussion of and hands-on appreciation of what goes into producing some of the world’s finest small-production wines, there is the wine-blending class, “Blend Your Own Merlot,” which is led by a winery host and includes a guided tour of the property, tasting several wines and discussing the blending process, and then sitting down in the caves and creating the blend for the 375mL bottle of wine you take home with you. The uniqueness doesn’t end there. After you’ve toured the winery and learned what goes into its wine production, Rutherford Hill offers a final Napa Valley rarity: the ability to purchase wines and drink them onsite, enjoying the beautiful view of the Valley floor from the winery’s Silverado Trail vantage point. Guests are encouraged to use the picnic grove after visiting the winery, and there are plenty of terrific winery-only offerings to enjoy while there. TUBBS LANE Calistoga LINCOLN RAS Galleries Even owner Ronda Schaer could not have envisioned that her affection for the little village of Yountville would someday blossom into a full-blown love affair. “This is a town that you can get your arms around.” Twenty years ago she did just that. With the opening of her now famous art gallery, RAS Galleries, Ronda has embraced her community and graced it with one of its most successful and admired businesses. It was her passion for art, and glass in particular, that moved Ms. Schaer to open a gallery. “I have always been drawn to glass.” But it was the work of American glass artists that really captured her heart. Representing more than two hundred American artists, the gallery has become one of the premiere venues in which to experience the drama, imagery and vision of this artistic medium. The gallery also features the work of some extremely gifted fine artists, with original oil paintings from artists throughout California and the Pacific Northwest, as well as the Eastern Seaboard and point in between. The whimsical chefs of ceramic artist, Cynthia Hipkiss are also a favorite of collectors. Says Ronda, “I created RAsgalleries with a singular focus on Original American Art, primarily Art Glass, my personal passion.
