Mark Your Calendars: Lodi School Street Wine Stroll, April 15
Ten Life-Size Sculptures by Seward Johnson
will Grace the Streets of Downtown Lodi
The 19th annual School Street Wine Stroll
will be celebrated with the arrival of ten lifesize
bronze sculptures created by internationally
known artist, Seward Johnson. The
sculptures will be placed throughout School
Street in the historic area of downtown Lodi
where the Wine Stroll takes place. More than
25 Lodi wineries will be pouring their wines
in shops and boutiques on Friday, April 15,
from 6 to 9 p.m.
The City of Lodi, through the Arts in
Public Places Funding, is sponsoring the ten
sculptures to be placed on School Street in
downtown Lodi from April 15 to July 15,
2011. Lodi Arts Advisory Board Member
Roger Stafford said, “This is an opportunity
for the Art in Public Places Committee to give
to the City of Lodi an interactive form of art
that will be fun and educational. This art
display also provides an attraction to the
downtown for Lodi residents of all ages and
their out of town visitors.”
The public art exhibit will feature the lifesize
sculptures off world-renowned artist,
Seward Johnson. One of America’s most
beloved sculptors, Johnson recreates life in
our times in vividly realistic bronze. At 80,
Johnson has been sculpting life-like figures
for over 30 years, many of which are nestled
into the landscapes of public parks and
private estates. His sense of humor, and affection
for people, is evident in all of his works
from the little girls reluctantly sharing an icecream
cone, to the tenderness of a mother
reading to her young child. “What I’m trying
to do is draw attention to the simple pleasures,
to show how much fun life is. That is
why there are so many humorous details in
my work.” Johnson captures moments for us.
He holds up a mirror for our reflection, and it
is ultimately one that will make us smile at
ourselves. Details and photos of the complete
collection can be found at www.sewardjohnson.com.
The sculptures are on loan from The
Sculpture Foundation, a charitable and
educational organization dedicated to
providing exhibitions and landmark public
artworks for communities. Director of the
Foundation, Paula Stoeke notes, “The Foundation
is delighted to share these sculptures.
We hope that the community will embrace
the artwork and integrate the event into the
fabric of Lodi, from the classrooms to the
dinner table conversations.”
During the School Street Wine Stroll, Lodi
Appellation wineries will be paired with
merchants for an evening of wine, food, shopping
and entertainment. Guests can taste
award-winning wines, meet the vintners and
enjoy appetizers provided by hosting
merchants. Lodi wineries will share their
special wines and are on hand to discuss their
vintages. Tickets are $30 in advance, $40 at
the event; designated driver tickets are $10 in
advance or $15 at the event. Lodi hotels are
offering special discounts for overnight visits.
