12.4. All first-degree examinations are held in the summer term, in accordance
with a timetable published by the Academic Registrar or nominee and
notified to students. Where a student is required to repeat an examination,
or is permitted to defer it, he or she will sit the examination at its next
scheduled occurrence. In the case of first-degree programmes and
Graduate Certificates or Diplomas, examinations for reassessment and
deferred assessment are normally scheduled between June and
September before the start of the next academic year.
13. Application for deferred assessment
13.1. A student who is unable, for reasons beyond his or her control, to
complete the assessment of a module in the year of study, or is unable
submit work by the due date, (after permitted extensions, if applicable)
may apply for deferred assessment.
13.2. To request deferred assessment, a student must complete the Deferred
Assessment Request form, with supporting evidence, and return it to the
Academic Registrar or nominee. The full procedure for requesting
deferred assessment, and for considering requests, is detailed in
Appendix D of these regulations. Regulation 15, below, also relates to
serious illness or other circumstances which could not have been
foreseen, but which arise after the published date for requesting deferred
assessment.
13.3. Requests for deferred assessment shall be considered by a subcommittee
of three members of the relevant Board of Examiners, normally including
the Chair of the Board, the relevant Dean or nominee, and the Academic
Registrar or nominee. The Academic Registrar or nominee will notify
students of the decisions taken.
13.4. Students seeking deferred assessment on the basis of a long term
medical condition, the intensity of which varies, must make a separate
request in each year in which deferred assessment is sought.
14. Special assessment arrangements and alternative assessment
14.1. Students with a disability affecting their learning or assessment normally
provide the Academic Registrar or nominee with a recent assessment of
needs either at point of registration or subsequently, when the disability is
first diagnosed. If the student’s disability is a continuing one, and the
recommendations in the needs assessment are clear, a general decision
on special assessment arrangements for relevant forms of assessment
(such as an examination) may be made early in the student’s first year of
study. The decision will be made in consultation between the Chair of the
Board of Examiners, the Personal Tutor, the Academic Registrar or
nominee, and the Disability Officer if this is a different person. The special
arrangements offered by the College may differ in points of detail from
those recommended in a needs assessment, and may also take account
of precedent and parity with other candidates in a similar situation. The
