Section 1: General Academic Regulations General Academic Regulations relate to all taught programmes and students of the College. The applicability of other sections is specified within those sections. 1. Awards of the University of London conferred by Heythrop College 1.1 Undergraduate awards Foundation Degree (Arts) Bachelor of Arts (BA) Bachelor of Divinity (BD) 1.2 Taught postgraduate awards Graduate Diploma Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) Master of Arts (MA) These regulations provide additionally for the exceptional award, by the College rather than the University, of a Certificate of Higher Education or Diploma of Higher Education (Regulation 33) 2. Awards of the University of London available to students of Heythrop College Awards organised on a Federal basis Master of Arts (MA Philosophy) (closed to new entrants) MPhilStud (Master of Philosophical Studies) (closed to new entrants) Research Degrees of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) 3. Award titles A list of the approved award titles which may be conferred in 2010-11 is given in Appendix A. 4. Publication of Regulations and Amendments 4.1. The College Regulations are published annually by the beginning of the Academic Year. 4.2. New or amended Regulations which are approved by the Academic Board in the course of an academic year will be published in the Regulations for the following academic year. Amendments to regulations will not normally be introduced during an academic year. 4.3. Suspensions of or exemption from the College Regulations which relate to assessment are normally considered through the procedures defined for deferred assessment, special assessment arrangements and alternative assessment (Regulations 13 and 14). Suspension of regulations in any other circumstances may be approved by the Academic Registrar or nominee, the relevant Dean and the Chair of the Academic Board. 4
5. Admission and entrance requirements 5.1. To be admitted to a programme of study at Heythrop a student must: 5.1.1. be at least 17 years of age, subject to waiver in exceptional circumstances; 5.1.2. satisfy the general entrance requirements of the College or the University, if applicable; 5.1.3. satisfy any additional requirements specified by the College; 5.1.4. comply with the registration procedure laid down by the College; 5.1.5. be proficient in the English language. Non-native speakers are normally required to achieve a standard in an approved English language test, as detailed in the Programme Specification. 5.2. The College takes decisions on admission in good faith on the basis that the information given in respect of the applicant is accurate. If it is subsequently discovered that the information given is inaccurate or untrue, the College may refuse admission or terminate a student’s registration. 6. Registration of Students 6.1. To follow a programme of study at the College students are required to register with the College and to reregister annually according to the procedures laid down by the College. 6.2. Annual registration for a programme of study includes registration for the relevant assessment. The conditions governing admission to assessment, and eligibility for an award, are detailed in Regulations 11 and 23. 6.3. A student will not normally be permitted to register concurrently for more than one higher education award of the College or of any other higher education institution unless the scheme under which concurrent registration will operate has been approved by the Academic Board. 6.4. A student who is entered for reassessment or deferred assessment in any part of one taught programme of the College may not register for another programme at the College until the assessment requirements of the first are complete. 6.5. To maintain their registration, students must satisfy the academic requirements of the programme, and must also abide by regulations and codes of conduct from time to time published by the College, and pay the required tuition fees and other monies owed to the University of London. 6.6. Students may apply to transfer their registration to another programme of study offered at the College or by another higher education institution. Transfer of registration is permitted only with the agreement of the Programme Convenors of both the programmes, and if there are good academic grounds or other good cause for the transfer. A student wishing to transfer from one programme to another must consult with the Programme Convenor of the programme to which they wish to transfer. A Programme Convenor will consider the length of study already undertaken, the similarities and differences between the two programmes, and the ability of the student to undertake a change of programme.
