Successful candidates at the conclusion of all their assessment for the degree will be awarded one of the following: (a) First Class Honours, (b) Upper Second Class Honours, (c) Lower Second Class Honours, (d) Third Class Honours, (e) Pass. (See regulations 35 and 39 below). 22
28. Aegrotat Provisions 28.1. A candidate who has completed his/her course of study, and who through illness or other cause judged sufficient by the relevant Board of Examiners has been absent from the whole or part of the assessment in his/her final year, may be considered for the award of either a classified or an Aegrotat degree under the following regulations. 28.2. An application must be submitted to the Academic Registrar or nominee by, or on behalf of, the candidate within seven days from the last day of the examinations or other end-of-year assessment, and must be accompanied by a medical certificate or other statement of the grounds on which the application is made. 28.3. If the examiners are able to determine on the basis of examination evidence that a candidate on whose behalf an application has been made has reached the standard required for the award of a degree with a Pass or Honours classification, they shall recommend the award of such a degree and shall not consider the candidate for the award of an Aegrotat degree. 28.4. In cases where the examiners do not judge it appropriate to award a classified degree to a candidate on whose behalf an application has been made, they are to decide whether the candidate can be awarded an Aegrotat degree, which is necessarily unclassified. The examiners, having considered the work which the candidate has submitted at the examination or in such part of the examination as he/she has attended (if any), records of the candidate’s performance during his or her studies in the programme, and assessment provided by the candidate’s teachers, will determine whether evidence has been shown to their satisfaction that had he/she completed the examination in normal circumstances the candidate would have reached a standard which would have qualified him/her for the award of the degree. If the candidate satisfies this criterion, he/she can be declared eligible to apply to the College for an Aegrotat degree. 28.5. A candidate on whose behalf an application has been made will be informed whether the examiners have determined that he/she is eligible to apply for the award of an Aegrotat degree and that, if so, he/she may either apply for the award of an Aegrotat degree, or not apply but reenter for the same assessment at a later date. 28.6. A candidate who has applied for the award of an Aegrotat degree will be informed when the degree has been confirmed and will not thereafter be eligible to re-enter for the assessment for the classified degree. 28.7. On re-entry for the classified degree a candidate who has been informed that he/she is eligible to apply for the award of an Aegrotat degree ceases to be eligible so to apply. 23
