Indeed it is. The boys in the back<br />
room at <strong>Apple</strong> found a way to have<br />
each byte on the disk represent 6<br />
bits of your information as opposed<br />
to the old DOS's 5 bits. Thus each<br />
sector only needs 336 bytes to<br />
encode data, which leaves more<br />
room on the track for more sectors.<br />
In addition to changing the data<br />
density, <strong>Apple</strong> made a few other<br />
format changes on Language System<br />
diskettes which bear mention.<br />
To speed operations up, sectors are<br />
interleaved using the alternating<br />
scheme described above. In addition,<br />
the beginning marks for both<br />
address and data blocks have been<br />
changed to ($DS, $AA, $96). This<br />
means that the old DOS would<br />
never find anything on the disk no<br />
matter how hard it tried. The disks<br />
are also designed to boot dif-<br />
ferently, with the boot program<br />
jumping to $800 instead of $300.<br />
Presumably this allows loading a<br />
larger second-stage boot routine at<br />
that address.<br />
The changed boot program is<br />
contained in one of the Disk Controller<br />
Card ROMs which come<br />
with the Language System. The<br />
other controller card ROM is called<br />
the "state machine ROM." Actually<br />
the latter ROM is a complex logic<br />
gate which controls the format and<br />
timing of bit transfer between the<br />
<strong>Apple</strong> and its disk hardware. The<br />
original state machine ROM works<br />
well with 13 sector disks, but isn't<br />
reliable enough for 16 sectors. A<br />
few simple changes fix the reliability<br />
problem, and in addition allow a<br />
denser form of data encoding. A<br />
new state machine ROM with the<br />
necessary changes is included with<br />
the Language System.<br />
The improved density provided<br />
with the Language System is very<br />
desirable. So desirable, in fact, that<br />
<strong>Apple</strong> is now introducing DOS 3.3<br />
which uses the improved 16 sector<br />
format. DOS 3.3's most obvious<br />
benefit will be greater disk storage:<br />
140K vs. 114K. A program supplied<br />
will reformat your diskettes for you.<br />
The changes involved in the new<br />
format require extensive revision<br />
of the RWTS routines and at least<br />
some modifications to the main<br />
DOS. For compatability reasons the<br />
command level DOS will be the<br />
same as in all previous DOS's,<br />
however, so don't look for any<br />
dramatic increases in speed.<br />

STOCK MARKET ANALYSIS PROGRAM<br />
OJI WEEKLY AVERAGE 1897-<strong>1980</strong><br />
ANA1· (ANALYSIS 1) is a set of BASIC Programs which enables the user to<br />
perform analyses on the Dow Jones Industrial weekly average data. From 6<br />
months to 5 years of user selected OJI data can be plotted on the entire screen<br />
in one of 5 colors using <strong>Apple</strong>s' High Resolution capabilities. The OJI data can<br />
be transformed into different colored graphic representations called transforms.<br />
They are: user specified moving averages; a least squares linear fit (best straight<br />
line); filters for time , magnitude, or percentage changes; and user created relationships<br />
between the OJI data, a transform, or a constant using +,-.x,/ operators.<br />
Colored lines can be drawn between graphic points . Graphic data values or<br />
their dates of occurrence can be displayed in text on the screen. Any graph or<br />
text can be outputted to a users printer. The Grid Scale is automatically set to<br />
the range of the graphs or can be user changed. As many colored graphs as<br />
wanted can be plotted on the screen and cleared at any time. The user can code<br />
routines to operate on the OJI/transform data or create his own disk file data<br />
base. ANA 1 commands can be used with his routines or data base. An Update<br />
program allows the user to easily update the OJI file with current OJI weekly<br />
data.<br />
The ANA 1 two letter user commands are: CA= Calculate, no graph. CG= Clear<br />
Graphs, leave Grids. CK = Checking out program, known data. CO= Color of next<br />
graph (red . green, violet, white, blue). CS= Clear Screen. DL =Draw Line between<br />
points. Fl = Filter data for time, magnitude. or percent change. FU= Data, transform,<br />
or constant Function with •,-,x.I operator. GD = Graphic mode, display<br />
all Graph Data on screen. GR= Graph data to screen. GS= Set Grid Scale. HE= Help,<br />
summary of any commands usage. LD = Load Data from disk file from inputted<br />
date to memory. LG= Leave Graphs, automatic Grid rescaling . LO= Look, select<br />
a range of the LD data and GR; All commands can now be used on this range.<br />
LS = Least squares linear fit of the data. MA= Moving Average of the data. NS=<br />
No Scale. next graph on screen does not use Grid Scale. NT= No Trace. PR= User<br />
implimented Printer routine. TD= Text mode, display Text Data on screen. Tl=<br />
Time number to date or vice versa. TR= Trace. TS= Text Stop for number of lines<br />
outputted to screen when in TD. U1/U2 =User 1/2 implimented routines. VD=<br />
Values of Data outputted in text. VG= Values of Grid; low/high/delta. VT= Values<br />
of Transform outputted in text.<br />
