Limoges airport reveals a r<strong>is</strong>e <strong>in</strong><br />

UK-bound passengers <strong>in</strong> 2009<br />

Although fewer passengers<br />

passed through <strong>the</strong> airport <strong>in</strong><br />

2009, <strong>the</strong> numbers go<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

UK dest<strong>in</strong>ations rose compared<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> previous year.<br />

Limoges-Bellegarde airport<br />

sees a positive future and<br />

<strong>is</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g forward <strong>to</strong> better<br />

times ahead <strong>in</strong> 2010 as <strong>France</strong><br />

exits recession, despite announc<strong>in</strong>g a<br />

drop <strong>in</strong> passenger figures of 7% for <strong>the</strong><br />

year 2009.<br />

In h<strong>is</strong> New Year’s address, Jean-Pierre<br />

Limous<strong>in</strong>, president of <strong>the</strong> Chambre<br />

de commerce et d’<strong>in</strong>dustrie (CCI) for<br />

Limoges and Haute-Vienne, <strong>to</strong>ld airport<br />

workers, “We have never seen as many<br />

Brit<strong>is</strong>h passengers as we did last year…<br />

<strong>The</strong> overall <strong>in</strong>crease <strong>in</strong> passengers <strong>to</strong><br />

and from <strong>the</strong> UK was 1.7%”.<br />

<strong>The</strong> small drop <strong>in</strong> airport traffic can be<br />

directly attributed <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> decrease <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

number of <strong>in</strong>ternal (ma<strong>in</strong>ly Air <strong>France</strong>)<br />

flights. <strong>The</strong> president of <strong>the</strong> CCI also<br />

revealed that, “In 2010, we will have<br />

11 routes <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK… 6 run by FlyBe<br />

and 5 by Ryanair.” He also hoped that<br />

<strong>the</strong> number of <strong>in</strong>ternal passengers<br />

with<strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong> would <strong>in</strong>crease with <strong>the</strong><br />

proposed new route <strong>to</strong> Par<strong>is</strong>. “As you<br />

know, we have been <strong>in</strong> d<strong>is</strong>cussions<br />

about a new Limoges-Par<strong>is</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e. I<br />

SNCF could slash TGV<br />

routes as profits fall<br />

<strong>The</strong> SNCF has announced<br />

plans <strong>to</strong> make cuts on a<br />

number on its TGV routes<br />

by <strong>the</strong> end of <strong>the</strong> year.<br />

Long seen as a cash cow for <strong>the</strong><br />

national rail network, <strong>the</strong>se long<br />

d<strong>is</strong>tance l<strong>in</strong>es saw operational profits<br />

plummet from 20.1% <strong>to</strong> only 10.2%<br />

<strong>in</strong> 2009.<br />

<strong>The</strong> result, accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> French<br />

newspaper Les Echos, <strong>is</strong> that SNCF<br />

will have <strong>to</strong> “seriously reconsider its<br />

economic model”.<br />

<strong>The</strong> company has already been<br />

prepar<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> ground for cuts. In<br />

recent months, as a result of <strong>the</strong><br />

general economic depression, TGV<br />

services have already been trimmed<br />

on certa<strong>in</strong> l<strong>in</strong>es outside of peak<br />

hours. <strong>The</strong> new moves, however, are<br />

likely <strong>to</strong> be much more severe, with<br />

some less profitable l<strong>in</strong>es hav<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong>ir services slashed and maybe<br />

even closed al<strong>to</strong>ge<strong>the</strong>r. Accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

sources close <strong>to</strong> SNCF, 20% of TGV<br />

l<strong>in</strong>es are currently mak<strong>in</strong>g a loss, and<br />

Flybe has 6 routes <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> UK announced for 2010, with Ryanair fly<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> ano<strong>the</strong>r 5 Brit<strong>is</strong>h dest<strong>in</strong>ations<br />

<strong>the</strong>re are fears th<strong>is</strong> could r<strong>is</strong>e <strong>to</strong> 30%<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> com<strong>in</strong>g year.<br />

Those l<strong>in</strong>es thought <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

fir<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e are Par<strong>is</strong>-Arras, Nantes-<br />

Strasbourg, Lille-Strasbourg and<br />

most significantly for our region,<br />

Bordeaux-Strasbourg. Th<strong>is</strong> last l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

currently passes through Poitiers and<br />

any cuts <strong>to</strong> services would presumably<br />

have an impact on <strong>the</strong> planned LGV<br />

Limoges-Poitiers high-speed l<strong>in</strong>e and<br />

its connection, via Poitiers, <strong>to</strong> Par<strong>is</strong><br />

and beyond. ■<br />

can not tell you exactly how many<br />

companies have responded, but suffice<br />

it <strong>to</strong> say that <strong>the</strong>re have been a good<br />

number, which proves <strong>the</strong> importance<br />

of <strong>the</strong> airport and <strong>the</strong> region <strong>in</strong> general.”<br />

Alan Whitten<br />

St-Dizier-Leyrenne, 23<br />

Via email<br />

Dear Sir,<br />

<strong>The</strong>re seems no doubt <strong>to</strong> me that <strong>the</strong><br />

LGV Limous<strong>in</strong> will be a complete<br />

d<strong>is</strong>aster for <strong>the</strong> <strong>Creuse</strong>, and serves<br />

<strong>to</strong> highlight once aga<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> complete<br />

<strong>in</strong>difference <strong>in</strong> Par<strong>is</strong> <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> world of<br />

<strong>the</strong> prov<strong>in</strong>ces. I use <strong>the</strong> tra<strong>in</strong> from La<br />

Souterra<strong>in</strong>e <strong>to</strong> Par<strong>is</strong> and CdG airport<br />

whenever I can, and it <strong>is</strong> a good<br />

service. It <strong>is</strong> almost certa<strong>in</strong> that if <strong>the</strong><br />

proposed LGV goes ahead than <strong>the</strong><br />

POLT service will decl<strong>in</strong>e, surely<br />

it’s <strong>in</strong>evitable given <strong>the</strong> huge costs<br />

<strong>in</strong>volved<br />

<strong>The</strong> consequence <strong>is</strong> that I would <strong>the</strong>n<br />

have <strong>to</strong> catch a tra<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong> Limoges and<br />

<strong>the</strong>n change <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> TGV; or worse <strong>still</strong><br />

drive <strong>to</strong> Limoges station, usually more<br />

than 1 hour, <strong>in</strong>stead of La Souterra<strong>in</strong>e<br />

less than 40 m<strong>in</strong>utes, both <strong>the</strong>se options<br />

<strong>in</strong>volve much more time, a lot more<br />

cost, and turn an ‘eco-friendly’ trip<br />

<strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> one with a large carbon footpr<strong>in</strong>t.<br />

Regard<strong>in</strong>g fares, of course TGV prices<br />

will also apply, which would be an<br />

Clos<strong>in</strong>g h<strong>is</strong> address, M. Limous<strong>in</strong> <strong>to</strong>ld<br />

workers that <strong>the</strong>ir “quality and expert<strong>is</strong>e<br />

help run a mach<strong>in</strong>e that de<strong>live</strong>rs over<br />

400,000 passengers a year <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

dest<strong>in</strong>ation”. ■<br />

important consideration for most of us.<br />

Hav<strong>in</strong>g read <strong>the</strong> comments from<br />

<strong>the</strong> various élus, all I can say <strong>is</strong><br />

“bulls manure” [sic]. I have spent<br />

much time <strong>in</strong> a darkened room try<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>to</strong> work out why th<strong>is</strong> project <strong>is</strong> even<br />

be<strong>in</strong>g considered, but I <strong>still</strong> cannot f<strong>in</strong>d<br />

any commercial or log<strong>is</strong>tical reasons<br />

for it at all. I have however formulated<br />

a <strong>the</strong>ory, and it <strong>is</strong> that if SNCF<br />

improved POLT, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> same fashion<br />

as <strong>the</strong> west coast UK ma<strong>in</strong>l<strong>in</strong>e, <strong>the</strong>n<br />

<strong>the</strong>y would need Italian Pendol<strong>in</strong>o<br />

technology, so <strong>the</strong>ir mates at Alsthom<br />

would not benefit, and horror of<br />

horrors a non-French company would<br />

get some bus<strong>in</strong>ess!! But seriously<br />

does anyone really know I wonder<br />

Even more baffl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>is</strong> <strong>the</strong> very recent<br />

news <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> papers, 19th Jan La<br />

Montagne, that SNCF seem very<br />

likely <strong>to</strong> make significant rev<strong>is</strong>ions <strong>to</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> TGV services & prices <strong>in</strong> 2011,<br />

ma<strong>in</strong>ly for 2 reasons; <strong>in</strong>creases <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> l<strong>in</strong>e rental <strong>the</strong>y pay <strong>to</strong> RFF, and<br />

<strong>the</strong> open<strong>in</strong>g of high speed services <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>France</strong> <strong>to</strong> competition. So I ask aga<strong>in</strong><br />

why spend billions l<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g Limoges<br />

<strong>to</strong> Poitiers, a l<strong>in</strong>e where passenger<br />

numbers are completely unknown,<br />

<strong>in</strong>stead of improv<strong>in</strong>g an ex<strong>is</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g l<strong>in</strong>e<br />

with proven passenger numbers ■<br />

A Brive lady has been given a 2<br />

<strong>The</strong> <strong>in</strong>cident could have been much<br />

worse as <strong>the</strong> 68-year-old lady <strong>in</strong><br />

63 road deaths <strong>in</strong><br />

were 63 deaths on <strong>the</strong> roads of <strong>the</strong><br />

for 2008. In <strong>to</strong>tal 965 accidents were<br />
