The University of Wisconsin-Madison is competing with a light, tube-frame,<br />

turbocharged, single-cylinder powered vehicle for <strong>2010</strong>.<br />

An E85 ethanol fueled KTM 525-xC engine that has been bored to a<br />

displacement of 565 cm3 powers the <strong>2010</strong>. An IHI RHB32 turbocharger draws<br />

air through the restrictor and a student designed barrel throttle. A chain connects<br />

the electro-pneumatically actuated transmission to the final drive. A Drexler<br />

Motorsport Formula Student clutch type limited slip differential sends power from<br />

inboard tripod joints, through 300M half shafts and out to Rzeppa style constant<br />

velocity joints that drive aluminum hubs.<br />

Push rods connect Cane Creek Double Barrel four way adjustable shocks to the<br />

double, unequal length wishbone suspension and the Goodyear D2696 tires<br />

mounted to 13 inch wheels. Tilton master cylinders, AP Racing calipers and<br />

four outboard, floating rotors constitute the braking system. The driver is able to<br />

adjust brake balance electronically through the steering wheel, and rear anti-roll<br />

stiffness through a lever in the cockpit.<br />

A controller area network connects the Mototron engine control unit, the AiM<br />

EVO3 Pro data acquisition system, and the display on the steering wheel. A<br />

wireless modem is also able to transmit information to a laptop. It is possible to<br />

tune the engine on the fly with the car driving on the track using this connection.<br />

The MRT-12 is McGill Racing Team’s twelfth entry to the Formula SAE series.<br />

The team’s objectives for <strong>2010</strong> are: increased analysis, testing and validation,<br />

improved engine development and handling. The MRT-12 features standardized<br />

plumbing and fasteners in an effort to improve production. Passive rear-wheel<br />

steering has been implemented to improve corner entry. Further implementation<br />

of stressed carbon fiber body panels has reduced overall vehicle mass. Three<br />

levels of theoretical and empirical testing has decreased engine development time<br />

and produced a more powerful and reliable powertrain.<br />
