Population; 19.7 million. Location: a coastal megacity<br />

built on what used to be a group of 7 islands, many areas<br />

are only 5m above low tide level. Risk profile: highly<br />

exposure to coastal flooding. Mumbai is a Campaign<br />

Role Model City under the theme: Flood Protection and<br />

Urban Regeneration.<br />

Makassar, Indonesia<br />

Population: 1.4 million Location: southwest coast of<br />

the island of Sulawesi, facing the Makassar Strait.<br />

Risk profile: tsunamis and flooding.<br />

Jakarta, Indonesia<br />

Population: 9.8 million. Location: capital city, situated<br />

in the northwest coast of Java, at the mouth of the Ciliwung<br />

River on Jakarta Bay, which is an inlet of the Java<br />

Sea. Risk profile: earthquakes and flooding.<br />

Mashhad, Iran<br />

Population: 2.42 million Location: 850km east of Tehran<br />

at 950m elevation in the valley of the Kashaf River<br />

between two mountain ranges. Risk profile: floods,<br />

cyclones, earthquakes and drought. Mashhad is a<br />

Campaign Role Model City under the theme: Disaster<br />

Awareness and Education.<br />

Venice, Italy<br />

Population 263,996. Location: on a group of 118 islands<br />

in the Venice Lagoon. Risk profile: highly exposed to<br />

flooding as a result of low (and falling) elevation. Venice<br />

is a Campaign Role Model City under the theme: Cultural<br />

Heritage Protection.<br />

Ancona, Italy<br />

Population: 100,000 Location: Adriatic coast, 360 km2<br />

south of Venice. Risk profile: most significant hazard<br />

is landslides.<br />

Narok, Kenya<br />

Population: 60,000. Location: southern side of the Rift<br />

Valley and has varied topography, with a predominantly<br />

agricultural economy base. Risk profile: Flooding and<br />

drought.<br />

Kisumu, Kenya<br />

Population: 200,000. Location: port city in western Kenya.<br />

Risk profile: flooding is the most significant hazard.<br />

Beirut, Lebanon<br />

Population 1.5 million. Location: on a peninsula at the<br />

midpoint of Lebanon’s Mediterranean coast. Risk profile:<br />

exposed to earthquakes, floods, wildfires and landslides.<br />

Byblos, Lebanon<br />

Population: 100,000. Location: at the Mediterranean<br />

coast at 24km from Beirut. Byblos, participated in a<br />

city to city exchange programme with Venice, Italy<br />

regarding “Protection of Cultural Heritage” under the<br />

auspices of UNISDR “<strong>Making</strong> <strong>Cities</strong> <strong>Resilient</strong>” campaign<br />

framework.<br />

Kathmandu, Nepal<br />

Population: exceeding one million. Location: capital<br />

city, is situated in central Nepal bowl-shaped valley between<br />

four major mountains, at high elevation (approximately<br />

4600ft or 1400m). Risk profile: earthquakes and<br />

landslides.<br />

Telica, Quezalguaque and<br />

Larreynaga-Malpaisillo, Nicaragua<br />

Population: 71.000. Location: three municipalities are<br />

in Telica basin of the Department of Leon with an extension<br />

of 1,373 Km2. Risk profile: volcanic, seismic, hurricanes,<br />

floods, epidemics, environmental risks linked<br />

to gold mining and mono-agriculture.<br />
