• Residence. Never use street names/addresses. If possible, use descriptive information.
Residing in Decatur Georgia, for example, would be Metro Atlanta.
• Physical distinctions. Characteristics that would easily distinguish someone should be
changed. For example, having only one leg could be described as major mobility
impairment.
• Other characteristics that provide a reasonable possibility of identification. Think about
other aspects of your client that would give a “reasonable person” enough information to
accurately identify your client.
As BSW level social workers, you are encouraged to consider this issue in a deliberate
and prudent manner. That is, when preparing assignments for seminar, considering information
that is shared in your field evaluation sessions with me, and asking spontaneous questions or
offering comments in seminar, each of you will remember the importance of client
confidentiality. In addition, each of you must speak with your field instructor about how client
confidentiality will be handled from the agency’s perspective, including how case information
from the agency can be shared within the classroom!
As students, however, mistakes will be made on occasion. In situations where
confidential information is not sufficiently changed to protect identity, I would expect that all of
us will be patient and compassionate with each other. If anyone has a concern about
confidentiality being compromised or breached, please come and speak with me about the issue
as an initial step in handling the situation.
Policies, Expectations, and Course Requirements
1. Self - Awareness and Professional Growth Paper
Please follow the instructions and outline exactly as described below.
The purpose of this paper is to promote substantial student reflection upon their growth
and development during the first semester of their field education. Through deeper reflections,
self evaluations, and observations, the student will articulate at a more sophisticated and
informed level their development as a generalist social work practioner.
Please write an eight to ten page paper addressing each of the areas as described below. Please
use APA formatting and draw upon course materials and other materials which will enrich your
expressions. Please note the importance of how you are developing as a professional generalist
social worker and refer to materials, information, criteria, and other kinds of evidences which
support your growth and development.
A. Integrating Theory and Practice
Address how you utilize theory to inform your practice. You may draw upon social work
courses and other pertinent pre professional courses. Please provide a few specifics.
B. Professional Ethics
Address how the NASW Code of Ethics assists you in evaluating ethically charged
situations with you and your clients and also with you and your assigned agency. Additionally,
give one example in which you applied a guideline in the NASW Code of Ethics to inform your
decision making with a client.
