2010 nortH ISlanD Dtl cHaMPIonSHIPS By Ian Hovenden Waitemata Clay Target Club. 30 January – 1 February 2010 The Waitemata CTC hosted the 2010 North Island Championships over Auckland Anniversary Weekend. After a number of hard days of preparation of the grounds by a small group of members led by Bill Kyte, these were in excellent condition. This was made easier because of a concerted upgrade of grounds and facilities undertaken by the committee over the past few years. As normal, the target presentation was excellent thanks to Noel Cherry, who travelled up from his new home in Wellington to assist the club. He is definitely a loss to Waitemata. The traps were kept loaded and throwing targets thanks to a team of trappers who were organized by Tania Walker who, although not a shooter, is always of great value to the club because of her organizational abilities. Shoot marshalling is always a thankless task except by myself and this was handled in a really efficient manner by Tony Brogden who worked tirelessly to make sure squads were on the mark. I’m also appreciative of a number of members like Jim Senton who, although not shooting, were prepared to front up early in the morning each day and be available to referee not only the first squads but also to be there for the shoot offs later in the day. No small thanks are also owed to Jacqui, Amanda and Adrienne who looked after the office which from personal experience is one of the most thankless tasks at any event. Most of all for two days the weather gods co-operated and we had brilliant days on both Saturday and Sunday. Although on Monday it started out wet, this did not last and ended as a sultry humid day. Overall the scores were very high and the standard of shooting was excellent in all events. The amount of red on the board was a pleasure to see but a number of shooters commented that perhaps the events needed to be made tougher, but I will leave that to clubs to decide. The Single Rise shoot off was actually concluded on the Monday morning after Jon Beddis returned from Huntly and Cameron Rooney had to reschedule his flight South. Mention must be made of the Waitemata stalwart Laurie Coppins who, apart from being at the club to do preparations and working hard over the event, still had the ability to head off the field in the Ball Trap. Overall, a very successful event and the Waitemata Club is appreciative of the shooters who attended, the councillors who assisted and the many workers whose names I have not included. We look forward to the same event at the same place in 3 years time. Results: Skeet – HOA David Da Silva, Rotorua 25.
