The international forms of trap shooting provide no time to do anything but keep your eyes glued to the target and so the gun must shoot exactly where you look. <strong>Target</strong>s also vary a great deal in height, another reason to ensure your gun is neither shooting too high or too low. How much you can see of the rib is an indication of this. It should be remembered however even the lowest trap target is rising as it goes away from you and so at least 70% of the charge should be above the point of aim. Clearly there is a margin within which personal preference can decide what is right for you. For international targets it is best however to avoid any extreme either eay. With domestic trap (DTL) as all the targets are the same height, a higher shooting gun may well be a better choice. As well as height, width of comb is another issue. There are two divergent schools of thought here brought about I believe originally by two differing forms of trap shooting. In the case of domestic trap the gun is pointed almost parallel with the ground as the first view of the target is relatively high. This alows for a more upright posture if desired and the head need not drop as far forward which complements a thin tapered comb. In contrast Olympic trap targets exit from the ground 15 metres in front of the shooter. Much is said about the desirability of bringing the gun to the face which is true up to a point but inevitably as the angle from the shooter to the trap is fairly steep unless he holds a high gun point there will be inevitably a little more movement of the head forward and downwards as the shoulder is raised behind the gun and this position is better supported by a slightly broader comb which supports a greater area of the face. Certainly the Italians seem to think so and now there is a whole generation of British shooters who have used nothing but Italian guns who also agree. I am well aware that this was not always so, however the main critics of the broader comb nowadays are those who don’t shoot trap, but attempt to mount the guns as they would a game gun, which can’t be done successfully. In the end stock configuration is a matter of preference, but undoubtedly the trap stock has continued to evolve from little more than something more suitable for a game gun 40 years ago and makers and shooters have learnt a great deal over the years. DROP At Heel As a trap shooter’s head position is inevitably more forward and down, there is less drop at heel to accommodate this. Ready made stocks vary up to a difference of 10mm from comb to heel, a broader comb generally warrants about that amount, a thinner comb less. If more than 10mm front to back is required to achieve a comfortable head position, a Monte Carlo stock may be considered. MONte CARlO Originally designed for competitive live pigeon shooting, it was created to provide a trap shooter with a more head up position by accommodating a greater distance between the shoulder pocket and the cheekbone. It’s come in and out of fashion and at the moment is enjoying a comeback. Not everybody needs one and as with a conventional stock the drop at heel is dependent on the shooters length of neck and shape of shoulders. Some shooters choose a semi Monte Carlo without a lot of drop at heel but like the support at the back of the face the parallel comb provides. CAst As many trap shooters adopt a half facing position to the trap it reduces the need for much cast Nevertheless a small amount is usually desirable. In the case of the broad heavy chested man it will be particularly beneficial at the toe of the stock which will otherwise dig into the pectoral muscle. In the case of the shooter who stands squarer to the trap, more cast may be required particularly if he is using a stock with a broader comb. It should be remembered however that an exaggerated amount of cast is not desirable for a trap gun or any gunshot 31
