occurs. If these highly developed instincts don’t set off alarms, there is usually a reason for that, too. There is a basic level of instinct that becomes modified with experience, usually to make it more sensitive. Relationships are one of the things that cause modifications. Learning to trust someone has a lot to do with the experiences you have had in the past, so you generally are able to determine if someone is due your trust. The thoughts that come in this situation are usually ones that generate calm and pleasant feelings. Self-talk is the ability to modify thoughts that are scarier by substituting a more calming thought or by modifying the thought. The rational way to deal with thoughts you know are going to come is to use another thought to counter or change it. This will not happen if you just do it one time at the most vulnerable moment. Selftalk has to be done in stages. Each time you confront a fear, especially if you know the fear is not as bad as advertised (as in the case of shooting in a match), you can use a modifying thought. You can also do some homework after you have had at least one experience with the automatic thoughts from match stress and develop good ways to develop selftalk for modification. CBT has taught us we have to practice the technique of looking at the original thought and modifying it to something less if it is to work. This is no different to any other technique you practise when you are learning to shoot or be a winner. Just as in those techniques, if you don’t practise, they won’t work when you need them the most. tHe BAsIC stePs OF selF-tAlK identify the PrOBleM: This is the first thing any problem solver has to do. In this case after you experience the “danger” thought, you need to recognise it for what it is, an automatic thought that does not bear any resemblance to the actual situation. Once you realize match stress is an automatic response to the match situation, you are halfway there. The “danger” thought, may be something like “I can’t do this”, not “Run like hell,” so you have to be aware in order to recognise it. The other aspect you have to recognise is the instinctive response will not go away. There is no “personal relationship” you can have with a shooting match, so if you are to trust, it will have to be on a higher plane. Since it will not go away, you have to learn to live with it. Self-talk helps put it in perspective. deVelOP gOOd thOughts: This is not as hard as it sounds. The real trick is to be consistent and practise using your self-talk tools. Simple things like recognising the initial thought and then saying something like “it’s not as bad as it looks” can be very effective once you have tried it out in a match situation and then worked with it in your shooting diary or with a coach/shooting partner. At some point, you will find thoughts that work for you. Practise, then MOdify: Like all techniques, you may not get it right the first time. But as you work with this mental tool, you will get better at it and you will find what works. Just keep at it. Modify until you find something that works. Keep looking even when you have a good tool so you can find a great tool. So, what are you thinking when you shoot This is an important question to ponder. fIorDlanD cHaMPS Nightcaps held the Fiordland Champs on the 10 January in what best could be described as a typical winter’s day. We had just over one and a half inches of rain on the Saturday night and rain showers and wind all Sunday for the shoot. I must thank all shooters who turned up to shoot this competition especially those that travelled from Central Otago to contest the Fiordland and Tauri Shields. We had 50 shooters competing for the cups, seven teams vying for the five shooter Tauri Shield which is shot in conjunction with the Single Barrel match and five teams trying to win the Fiordland Shield which is a six person shoot over the Single Rise match. Congratulations must go to Gorge Road for winning both these Shields. They managed to beat Western Southland by one point on the Single Rise Shield, but had a bit more breathing space on the Single Barrel with three points ahead of host club Nightcaps. Once again Colin Waghorn was a force to contend with. He was in every shoot off bar the Double Rise, which is the only match he missed targets in for the day. This is very good shooting especially on the day’s conditions. Congratulations to all shooters who shot possibles or shot best scores, and if you happened to win yourself a cup, well done. Thanks to the Nightcaps team who worked to keep the shoot running smoothly and get finished in good time.
