Man’s Best Friend continued from page 9 many opportunities for clubs and individuals to donate money. Lions can also help by raising or finding someone to raise a puppy. One of those success stories is Coffee Creek Prison in Oregon where prisoners have an opportunity to raise a puppy. Of course, the prisoners must be on their best behavior and the experience promotes self esteem. This is an ultimate winwin story, the prisoner puppy raisers improve their self esteem and raise a dog who will change a disabled person’s life for many years. I love talking about LPCCI and CCI, so if you would like a program for your club or you would like to learn more about LPCCI, please contact me at 209-847-8825. The district has two LPCCI trustees, Don Bisbee in the San Joaquin region, a new trustee, Tom Bauder, from the Mountain Region. Also I am working on having at least one trustee from each region. Between all these folks we have someone who can make a presentation. Also, we are going to visit the Northwest Region training center in Santa Rosa on November 15 th for a graduation ceremony where those who have just been in training for two weeks with their new dog “officially” receive the dog from the puppy raiser. If we get enough people to go along, we can get a tour of the facility and a demo of the training of the dogs. Please call me if you are interested in joining us. ● LEOs by Lion Jim Weaver The Leo District 4-A1 officer training was held on October 11 at the Boys and Girls Club in Merced. Training was geared for presidents, vice presidents, secretaries, treasurers and directors. Topics covered leadership training and what Leos and Lions do around the world. They had guest speakers, videos, and roll playing. ● Student Speakers Contest Student speaker contest packets are available for ordering at the MD4 office. Club secretaries should have received a letter regarding ordering and have returned the enclosed postcard. If your secretary did not receive the letter, please contact the office in Santa Barbara. If you are having difficulty finding a school student speaker program, check with 4H & FFA groups in the area as well as boy scouts/girl scouts and church groups. Now is the time to find your target group and get packets. The summer cabins need to be winterized; a trench has to be dug for the new water pipes. We are using a backhoe for the majority of the work, but there’s always things that are needed to help with a trench; also there are the modesty panels to be put back up by the bathrooms at the dining hall. There is something for everyone to do who comes up to camp! We will work on Saturday morning, break for lunch (prepared by me) and then back to work in the afternoon. If you can give us the weekend, we will find something for you to do! Please email me at jrscouters@yahoo.com with numbers to cook for and what club you belong. Also you can leave a message at (209) 769-6185. The lunch cost is any amount donation you wish to give. Please pass this along to any club members who might be able to come. Also it is a good chance to visit and serve with your fellow Lions as well as see the camp. 10
Lions Day at the Races: By RC Roy Patterson Lions Day at the Races on September 14 was attended by over 200 Lions and friends. Thank you to all who took part. Honoraries who attended were DG Pat Casey Gillum and Frank, PDG Jim Loving and Lion Jill, PDG Dennis Noble and Barbara, and VDG Francis Bognuda and Lion Norma. Personally, I kept my losses low, enjoyed a good sandwich and beer, while visiting with Lions from West Point, Atwater-Winton, Livingston, Modesto 500, South Stockton, Stockton Delta, Stockton Pacifica, Linden and Tracy Breakfast. I hope everyone enjoyed the day as I did. (I thought part of the idea was to talk to “nonLions” too! Ed.) ● Membership Report – August: Hello to all my fellow Lions – I have received the LCI Cumulative Membership Report for August, and we have some work to do! Total new members: 39 CONGRATULATIONS Total transfers: 2 GREAT Total dropped: 49 BOO! Net loss for the month = 8 On Status Quo = None – Great I realize that some members were dropped in July (when dues were due) but did not hit this report until August. BUT WE NEED TO KEEP OUR FOCUS ON HAVING FUN AND PER- FORMING MEANINGFUL PROJECTS SO THAT OUR MEMBERSHIP WILL MEET THIS YEARS GOAL OF NET INCREASE OF 63! California in total has 127 clubs on Status Quo, so I am VERY happy that we are not one of them this month! California is down 235 members total so the other Governors have lots to do too!
