FRIEND” AS A
WORKING DOG

Jay Huston was injured in a parachute
malfunction while in the US Army. Today his CCI
Service Dog, Timo, helps him get out of bed,
picks up things from the floor, opening doors, and
many other tasks. Jacob was born with
osteogenesis imperfecta, a brittle bone disease
that makes his body extremely fragile. As a ten
year old, Jacob received his Skilled Companion
Dog, Nash, who has made Jacob much more
independent. The best part for Jacob is that
people pay attention to Nash, not his wheelchair.
Dog’s early relationship to man was probably one
of a quick meal of garbage from man’s campground.
Man welcomed the dogs because they
cleaned up the campsite. From those early years
dogs have been paying close attention to man.
Somewhere I read that dogs know more about us
than we know about them. Dogs also display a
strong desire to please their master. In the
morning when I head down the hall Patches, my
dog, heads to the front door because she knows it
is time to fetch the paper and that means she will
get a Milk bone snack. After breakfast if I just
look like I might be headed to the back door,
there she is ready to go check on the chickens
and maybe to the neighbor’s coi pond, to feed the
fish.
Canine companions for Independence (CCI) was
founded in 1975 to take advantage of dog’s desire
to please and learn, assisting those with
disabilities. Lions have been supporting CCI
since the early years and formally since the
founding of Lions Project for Canine Companions
for Independence (LPCCI) in 1983. LPCCI
recently celebrated its 25 anniversary. CCI
provides Service Dogs for those with disabilities
who can be responsible for the dog, and Skilled
Companion Dogs for those who need a partner to
be responsible for the dog, and Hearing Dogs for
those with hearing problems. They also train
Facility Dogs to visit those confined in medical
facilities.
LPCCI supports CCI in many ways. LPCCI offers
