SCANDINAVIAN TRAVELER | MEETS | LOU BRUNDIN Brundin’s lab work is focused on finding ways to heal damaged stem cells, which would alleviate the effects of multiple sclerosis. Her team consists of 10 researchers 38 “One researcher alone cannot solve the riddle that is MS. We have to put the pieces of the puzzle together to understand how we can keep the stem cells intact. Today, we still don’t know why the same process causes more damage to some people than it does to others,” she says. The most severe forms of MS are currently treated using stem cell transplants, a process in which doctors harvest stem cells from the patient and then paralyze the body’s immune system with chemotherapy. The patient then gets his or her stem cells back and the body can start to rebuild its immune system. So far, the results have been positive. The number of relapses (episodes of the illness) decreases and patients live more or less normal lives. The treatment is risky, however, since it takes a while for the rebuilt system to become active. Brundin hopes that one day there will be a vaccine for MS. During the course of her career, it has become possible to map someone’s entire genetic makeup but Brundin is more interested in epigenetics, which deals with how our genes are controlled, than looking for specific genes. “Why do mediators in inflamed cells alter stem cells” The immune system learns to attack nerve cells in the lungs before the brain and spinal cord. Maybe the overactive immune system can be cooled down there first. “If we can understand how this happens, maybe we can stop it with an inhaler,” she says. U nderstanding all there is to know about the brain means understanding existence itself. That may be impossible. The brain is an organ that adapts to different processes. If one center is damaged, the organ can use a completely different one. We may simply be the sum of a number of impulses, electrical signals, and an immune system that usually behaves like it should. “It’s fantastic, though. Things connect and become memories and feelings, sensations and smells. The hard part is replacing it when it gets damaged,” Brundin says. DECEMBER 2014 | SCANDINAVIAN TRAVELER
