come from students, faculty, and staff, based on set criteria, including meeting the “Four‐Way Test” of<br />

Rotary. Award recipients are selected by representatives from the <strong>University</strong> and the Fayetteville Rotary<br />

Club. Eight awards are now given annually. Four winners receive a $1,000 cash award and a $4,000 MU<br />

scholarship; another four students receive a $1,000 cash award and a $2,000 scholarship. Winners’ names are<br />

inscribed on a plaque that is on permanent display in the Alumni Dining Room at <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong>.<br />

The <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> President’s ROTC Award is presented to the cadet who has displayed the highest<br />

level of leadership and military excellence since entering ROTC.<br />

The Mendelevium Medallion was established in 2010 by the chemistry faculty and is presented to a<br />

graduating Chemistry major. The recipient is selected by the Chemistry and Physical Science faculty in<br />

recognition of exceptional academic achievement and active involvement and service within the department.<br />

The winner must also have graduate or professional school aspirations. The award consists of a medallion,<br />

certificate, and monetary award.<br />

The Senior Athlete of the Year Awards—Senior Female Athlete of the Year and Senior Male Athlete of the<br />

Year— are presented annually. A vote of the head coaches determines the recipients. Criteria include a<br />

minimum 2.0 G.P.A., athletic achievement and good character.<br />

Marshals for 2009 Graduations were selected by a faculty vote from nominees from the sophomore and<br />

junior classes on the basis of academic standing. To be eligible, the student must have been a full‐time student<br />

for two semesters.<br />

The Exemplary Teacher Award from the General Board of Higher Education and Ministry of The United<br />

<strong>Methodist</strong> Church honors an outstanding teacher who exemplifies excellence in teaching; civility and<br />

concern for students and colleagues; commitment to value‐centered education; and service to students, the<br />

institution, and the community. The recipient is selected by the university president and the academic dean<br />

and receives a certificate of appreciation and a $500 award.<br />

The Distinguished Professor of the Year Award is presented to a faculty member who has made a distinct<br />

difference in the teaching climate of the college in such areas as: model classroom teaching, campus<br />

leadership, pioneering teaching methodology, creative course development and/or instructional support. The<br />

distinguished teacher selected will receive a taxable $1,000 grant. <br />

The Alfred E. Cleveland Award for Excellence in Teaching was established in 2008 by Al Cleveland,<br />

chairman of the <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> Board of Trustees, to honor a faculty member who personifies<br />

excellence in mastery of his or her discipline, teaching methods, attitude, and interaction with students.<br />

Nominees must have taught full‐time at <strong>Methodist</strong> for at least three academic years. The recipient is chosen<br />

by a selection committee comprised of the President, Vice President for Academic Affairs, and two students—<br />

the president of the Student Government Association and the Chief Marshal for the current academic year.<br />

This is the highest teaching award given at <strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> and includes a $4,500 honorarium.<br />

The Monarch Theatre Award is given to the students who have contributed the most during the season to<br />

<strong>Methodist</strong> <strong>University</strong> Theatre Department productions, either in performance on stage or as technical support<br />

staff backstage.
