Visual Arts Curriculum overview and Assessment:
Duration: 1 Quarter (7 timetabled lessons over a two­week period).
Course Overview:
Our program in MYP1 is designed to give Students a comprehensive introduction to the Visual Arts in
the Middle Years Program at CIS.
The course includes a wide variety of exercises practising the principles of Art with specific emphasis
on Drawing, and encourages Students to express themselves creatively. Students will be introduced
to the habit of using a personal Developmental Workbook and to a theoretical and practical
knowledge and understanding of the Creative Cycle, which are used extensively throughout all grade
levels of the Middle Years Program.
Detailed Objectives:
Students will document all research, notes and preparatory drawings in their Developmental
Workbooks.
Students will use a variety of graphite pencils.
Students will make observational drawings with particular focus upon line and contour and different
techniques of shading.
Students will make Imaginative and Illustrative drawings.
Students will be introduced to the Creative Cycle and will prepare and execute a unit of inquiry
utilising all phases of the cycle.
Students will paint a value scale from black to white, and execute and original gouache painting in
greyscale based upon one of the drawing exercises.
Students will learn about Composition and its importance or the creation of a 2D artwork.

Assessment Criteria:
A grade based on 1­7 scale will be awarded based upon evaluation with regard to the following:
Developmental Workbooks. “Criteria A, B, C & D”
Completion of all tasks culminating in the production of original artwork. “Criteria A & B”
Knowledge and Understanding of the project; and the ability to follow directions. “Crit. A”
