BOSNIA & HERZEGOVINA<br />

Up to now no <strong>in</strong><strong>for</strong>mation is available about breeds or numbers of animals <strong>in</strong> Bosnia<br />

& Herzegov<strong>in</strong>a. Like <strong>in</strong> all Balkan Countries the “Domestic Balkan <strong>Donkey</strong>” also<br />

occurs. Experts are miss<strong>in</strong>g to make<br />

precise <strong>in</strong>vestigations on donkeys and<br />

probable occurr<strong>in</strong>g breeds.<br />

The “Herzegov<strong>in</strong>ian <strong>Donkey</strong>” is a donkey<br />

of small size. The colour varies from grey<br />

to brown. Eelstripe and schouldercross<br />

exist mostly. It is estimated, that about<br />

100 animals still exist. In Buhovo near<br />

Mostar, a reservat <strong>for</strong> endangered animals<br />

is under contruction. Here about 24<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividuals of the “Herzegov<strong>in</strong>ian <strong>Donkey</strong>”<br />

are kept.<br />

BULGARIA<br />

<strong>Donkey</strong>s are used <strong>in</strong> Bulgaria especially <strong>in</strong> the w<strong>in</strong>e grow<strong>in</strong>g areas. There is no<br />

knowledge about autochthonous breeds. There is no herdbook <strong>for</strong> donkeys. In literature<br />

and also <strong>in</strong> other <strong>Europe</strong>an Countries, a “Bulgarian <strong>Donkey</strong>” is mentioned<br />

sometimes, which orig<strong>in</strong>ates from Bulgaria and is of large size. But with<strong>in</strong> the country<br />

the “Bulgarian <strong>Donkey</strong>” or “Bulgarian Giant <strong>Donkey</strong>” is not known.<br />

Description: The animals generally are mixed and of small type like the donkeys <strong>in</strong><br />

Africa. They are grey <strong>in</strong> colour with a black eelstripe. Also a bigger type like Mart<strong>in</strong>a<br />

Franca and Cyprus <strong>Donkey</strong> occurs.<br />

Stock: Total (2000) 185744 (estimated)<br />

S<strong>in</strong>ce 1985 (348'769) the no. of animals is decreas<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>uously.<br />
