The breed belongs to the species Equus as<strong>in</strong>us somaliensis or Equus as<strong>in</strong>us<br />
europeus. This breed has contributed to the <strong>for</strong>mation and improvement of several<br />
<strong>Europe</strong>an breeds. It has had a great and decisive <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>in</strong> the <strong>for</strong>mation of the<br />
American Mammoth ass.<br />
The herdbook was established <strong>in</strong> 1880. The stock was descreas<strong>in</strong>g until end of the<br />
1970s. S<strong>in</strong>ce 1978 a<br />
conservation programme has<br />
been runn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />
Description: Height at withers:<br />
1.36m, weight: 350kg.<br />
Elongated harmonically<br />
con<strong>for</strong>mation: Colour: black,<br />
with characteristic shades on<br />
the muzzle, around the eyes,<br />
on belly and legs.<br />
The shade varies with the<br />
seasons. The ears are very<br />
mobile, mostly upright. Largesized<br />
and elongated animals<br />
with a concave profile. The<br />
breed is known <strong>for</strong> its longevity and sexual prowess.<br />
