SWEDEN<br />
As <strong>in</strong> the middle and western <strong>Europe</strong>an countries,<br />
<strong>in</strong> Sweden donkeys also are kept as<br />
hobby animals.<br />
There are two organizations engaged <strong>in</strong> donkey<br />
keep<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> Sweden:<br />
Svenska Poitou Foren<strong>in</strong>gen/Trait Poitev<strong>in</strong>;<br />
Vastra AA S-640 20; Bjork Vik, Sweden<br />
This Association is look<strong>in</strong>g <strong>for</strong> the Poitou donkeys<br />
<strong>in</strong> Sweden. The studbook is <strong>in</strong>ternational.<br />
About 15 Poitou donkeys are registered <strong>in</strong><br />
Sweden (see: Poitou, France).<br />
„Svensk husasna“, „Swedish <strong>Donkey</strong>“<br />
It is of no specific breed. There were 404 animals<br />
registered <strong>in</strong> the herdbook <strong>in</strong> 2002<br />

SWITZERLAND<br />
<strong>Donkey</strong>s <strong>in</strong> Switzerland are ma<strong>in</strong>ly not registered. SIGEF (Schweizerische Interessengeme<strong>in</strong>schaft<br />
für Eselfreunde), a countrywide active NGO, estimates the<br />
whole number of donkeys <strong>in</strong> Switzerland as more than 5'000 animals. Official statistic<br />
agricultural data show a number of 5672 donkeys h<strong>in</strong>nies and mules at 2401<br />
establishments. About 90% of the donkeys have no pedigree certificate. All donkeys<br />
orig<strong>in</strong>ated abroad. SIGEF registers donkeys of their members. About 1'900<br />
animals are registered <strong>in</strong> three categories: Small donkey, domestic donkey, big<br />
donkey. A list of sires is compiled to prevent breed<strong>in</strong>g with degenerated or sick<br />
animals. Thanks to the <strong>in</strong>tensive work of SIGEF, the situation and understand<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>for</strong> the species "donkey" is becom<strong>in</strong>g well known. But still donkeys are kept as<br />
fashionable, as a matter of prestige or a funny gag. Breed<strong>in</strong>g starts <strong>in</strong> a small<br />
scale. A standard will be worked out <strong>in</strong> the nearer future.<br />

Baudet de Poitou<br />
In august 2007 a Swiss association of Baudet de Poitou was founded. Aim of the<br />
new association is to promote the Poitou donkey, open<strong>in</strong>g of a Swiss herdbook and<br />
collaboration with the <strong>in</strong>ternational Poitou association.<br />
