<strong>Donkey</strong>s were imported from 1800 on. Two stra<strong>in</strong>s were to be found <strong>in</strong> the imports,<br />
a light brown shade and a darker coloured stra<strong>in</strong>, both small <strong>in</strong> stature. The imported<br />
donkeys became popular with small farmers, ma<strong>in</strong>ly <strong>in</strong> the congested districts<br />
and were particularly useful <strong>in</strong> turf harvest<strong>in</strong>g operations These donkeys later<br />
were improved by bigger donkeys from Spa<strong>in</strong>.<br />
<strong>Donkey</strong> Derbys were a popular feature of Irish rural festivals <strong>in</strong> the post 1960s period.<br />

In recent years, the ”English and Irish <strong>Donkey</strong> Society” was established. Breeders<br />
meet together and exhibitions of the donkeys are arranged.<br />
Exact population numbers of donkeys <strong>in</strong> the country is unknown up to now.<br />
