Zoological Systematics<br />
<strong>Donkey</strong>s belong to the order of odd-toed Ungulates (Perissodactyla), sub-order<br />
Horse-like (Hippomorpha). They belong to the Horse-Family (Equidae). This family<br />
<strong>in</strong>cludes the genus Horse (Equus) with five under-genera (see Fig. 1): Wild Horse<br />
(Equus caballus, or. Equus przewalski), Wild Ass (Equus hemonius), Ass (Equus<br />
as<strong>in</strong>us), Zebra (Hippotigris), and Grevyzebra (Equus grevyi).<br />

Phylogeny<br />
The ancestors of the domestic donkey (Equus as<strong>in</strong>us) are the African Wild Asses.<br />
They were divided <strong>in</strong>to three subspecies: North African Wild Ass (Equus as<strong>in</strong>us atlanticus),<br />
Nubian Wild Ass (Equus as<strong>in</strong>us africanus), and Somali Wild Ass (Equus<br />
as<strong>in</strong>us somalicus). Equus as<strong>in</strong>us atlanticus was already ext<strong>in</strong>ct <strong>in</strong> Roman times.<br />
The Nubian Wild Ass, from which<br />
our domestic donkey (Equus as<strong>in</strong>us<br />
as<strong>in</strong>us) ma<strong>in</strong>ly descends, are also<br />
threatened by ext<strong>in</strong>ction. They are<br />
sandy coloured, have a dist<strong>in</strong>ctive<br />
eelstripe, the so-called shoulder<br />
cross and white legs.<br />
