Baudet de Poitou (syn.: Ane de Poitev<strong>in</strong> ; Ane du Poitou; Poitou-Esel;)<br />

It orig<strong>in</strong>ates from North West Africa and appeared <strong>in</strong> France <strong>in</strong> the 10th century.<br />

The Poitou donkey was used <strong>for</strong> mule breed<strong>in</strong>g. There<strong>for</strong> it was bred <strong>in</strong> an extra<br />

big size. Muleproduction and mule exportation were very famous. The Poitou donkey<br />

was exported to numerous countries, be<strong>for</strong>e the market collapsed after 1950.<br />

A herdbook is established s<strong>in</strong>ce 1884; In 1972 the breed was nearly ext<strong>in</strong>ct.<br />

Description : brown-bay coat,<br />

sometimes yellowish, silver-grey<br />

bordered by a reddish r<strong>in</strong>g around<br />

mouth, nose and eyes ; very light<br />

colour underneath the belly and<br />

<strong>in</strong>side the thighs ;<br />

Height: 1.35 - 1.56m (sires);<br />

Weight: 350-420kg (sires); large<br />

head, long open ears; strong neck,<br />

long, straight back, short croup,<br />

long muscular thighs, straight<br />

shoulders, prom<strong>in</strong>ent breast-bone,<br />

rounded rib cage ; powerful limbs<br />

with very broad jo<strong>in</strong>ts ; wide, open hooves covered with hair.<br />

Use: mule production. The National stud dept. of the M<strong>in</strong>istry of agriculture, <strong>in</strong> association<br />

with the breeders and the Marais poitev<strong>in</strong> national park encourages<br />

breed<strong>in</strong>g to preserve the Poitou donkey. A safeguard program has been set up <strong>for</strong><br />

identification of animals. Poitou donkeys are now found <strong>in</strong> 8 <strong>Europe</strong>an Countries,<br />

but only <strong>in</strong> very small numbers. An <strong>in</strong>ternational herdbook is lead by UPRA (see<br />

below). The <strong>in</strong>ternational herdbook was closed 2004. S<strong>in</strong>ce January 2007 the<br />

studbook was closed <strong>for</strong> French animals.<br />
