Yearbook 2007 I Am Brand
“Today the primary capital
of many businesses is their
brands. For decades, the
value of a company was
measured in terms of its
real estate, then tangible
assets, plants and
equipment. However, it has
recently been recognized
that a company’s real value
lies outside the business
itself, in the minds of
potential buyers.”
Jean-Noel Kapferer, Strategic Brand Management
Foreword In the modern world of media sound-bites and political
show-boating, how you are perceived is almost always more
important than who you really are. Think of a brand like Nike and
you rarely consider anything else other than the instant gratification
communicated to you by their own advertising machine.
The most important assets of any business are, to the consumer,
intangible - the name and/or brand marks, symbols, and slogans. It is
these graphic marks and their underlying associations that convey and
dictate to us our perception of worth, quality, familiarity and associated
lifestyle connotations.
These unique visual assets, which create in the mind a brand perception,
are the most powerful conveyor of identity and worth.
Are brands almost free from the products that they represent Is the
brand a graphic mark that has the power to grace any product with it’s
mysterious and powerful associations
Victoria Beckham once famously indicated that her ambition was to be
more famous than Persil Automatic. This desire might help us to
understand that fame is to do with being recognised rather than anything
else. She is famous and therefore recognised beyond her target market -
those who buy her records. This is the power of the brand.
‘I Am Brand’, is a yearbook that forms part of the 2007 Final Show;
celebrating our graduating students from BA[Hons] Graphic
Communication at the University of Wolverhampton. It is a personal time
capsule; a reminder of their time spent studying here at the University,
their friends, their ‘enemies’ and those strange people who never spoke
to each other in three years!
The student contributors aim to collectively propose a contemporary
statement about the twenty first century obsession with the designer
label by creating a brand that that represents them.
Each student has also showcased three further examples of their work
and included musings on their time spent here and on their aspirations
for the future.
We hope that this book contains some Persil, as well as our Daz!
All of the images and text in this book has been included in unedited
form and therefore is the sole responsibility of the named student.

1 ITR Kiosk: During summer 2006 I completed a Shell Step work
placement at IT Rentals Limited. There I took on the challenge of
producing animated 3D digital models of their rental products. I was
awarded the Most Enterprising Student award at the Local and
Regional Competitions for the work I produced.
2 Evoca Enterprises are a soft drinks company who wanted to
assess their current branding as they prepared to break into the
Western Market. I altered the ‘Pepsi’ and ‘CocaCola’ look of the
product and created them their own colour palette to differentiate
from competitors and enhance the Evoca brand.
3 Modern Living was a fictional exhibition created to apply a brand
and a theme across a range of promotional material. I wanted the
palette to be very fresh and minimal reflecting the current trend in
interior design.
Reflections Studying the graphics course at Wolverhampton has
been a mind-blowing experience. I have learnt so much and
enjoyed every minute. I now feel ready to take up a fulfilling career in
the design industry and carry on expanding my knowledge.
Aspirations I have always wanted to design my own house, but
that’s a way off yet. I just want to be happy, making millions has
never been my aim, and as long as I can afford my dream house I’ll
be happy!

1 This work was based on a graphic design project from which we
had to design for a Dance Festival. It was very interesting to
undertake were we had to design the co-operate identity an a
them. I wanted to use a lot of colour in the poster symbolising
dance. An example of my software skills in which I used Adobe
illustrator and Adobe Photoshop
2 This is my home page for my own personal website. It has my
own personal portfolio an also includes extra features. I was quiet
proud of the outcome because the design not only reflected my
software skill on Flash MX, Dreamweaver, and Adobe Photoshop
but also the influence of me.
3 A corporate identity in which was a live brief that took place on
my placement. I had to design a logo and slogan for an Ad Van
company. I really enjoy working with type and image; editorial
design is something I enjoy immensely.
Reflections I have thoroughly enjoyed my experience studying
graphics communication. I believe I have excelled in my design skills
during this period as it has given me confidence and a greater
understanding of design. I have progressed to a greater extent
throughout the three years it has helped me to become a more
mature and reflective student.
Aspirations I have always been interested in working within the
design industry, having a particular desire for the graphic and web
deigning aspect of the subject area. I hope my future brings me
exciting new opportunities were I will have the privilege creating
exciting designs in a job that I love.

1 This graphics poster is part of a re-branding design which also
features five new label designs and a 30 second animated advert.
With thorough research, the concept of this design uses circles to
reflect the ‘fizziness’ of the drink; with the addition of significant
colours, according to the flavours, also help reflect the refreshingness,
liveliness and excitement of the drink.
2 This graphics poster is part of a three series set which promotes
a ‘Horror Film Festival’. The idea was to capture the atmosphere of
a horror film by the use of type as image along with colour and
texture. Throughout the research a lot of different media was
experimented with to achieve the best possible impact.
3 This Iconic Image has now been selected to represent
Wolverhampton. The design uses ‘Identity as Image’ and with the
addition of comments of different employees, helps signify that no
matter what occupation we work within our roots are all the same…
Wolverhampton. The use of the hand also reflects the open arm
welcome that the city shows.
Reflections It’s unbelievably amazing how much I have learnt in
these three years. I have built my confidence and learnt to
appreciate how design works efficiently. The vast amount of support
from teachers has been incredible as they have helped spark of
some initial stages of some inspirational pieces of work created.
Aspirations My future main goal is to be happy in the design work
I produce. Idealistically I would love to work in a design company
and then branch of into my own line of work. My main goal is to
work with photography along side illustrations and maybe explore
different other types of design.

1 This is a spread from my book, I designed this page along with the
rest of the book as a surreal and abstract piece. I decided to create
this layout with a lot of white space to enhance the central image.
2 Here is my design for a horror film festival poster, the film was
‘The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’ so I decided to play on the
goriness and bloody side of the film. I felt that this design portrayed
the message of horror and worked well as a poster.
3 Here I re-branded the design of Evoca Cola. I decided to make
the design more fresh and appealing to the consumer, but keeping
the originality of the product at the same time. I did this by keeping
to the original colour palette but incorporated a stylized splash in
the background.
Reflections My time studying Graphic Communication has been
very educational and I feel I have grown more not just as a designer
but also as a person. I now feel that I have the confidence and the
right attitude to progress as a designer and take the next
step in life.
Aspirations My aim as a student was to be the best that I can be,
and I feel that I achieved that aim. So my aim for the future will also
be to be the best, and by having that goal to reach I feel I can
achieve my overall goal of being successful within graphic design.

1 Promo Website: This project gave me the opportunity to let my
web skills run free, with the design of a personal online portfolio. It
gave me the chance to use my mixed skills in illustration, HTML and
Flash to create a user friendly, visually exciting website.
2 Iconic image: This project was a live brief for the Wolverhampton
City Counsel and won a technical award for its effective design. The
brief was to create a fresh image, which would help bring business
from around the country to Wolverhampton.
3 Horror Posters: Here is two out of a series of 3 posters designed
for a horror festival. This was a type based brief with image used to
accompany the text. I felt that this was the project that I found my
own original style with.
Reflections While studying graphics I have developed so many
new techniques and skills, and finally found a unique style that I feel
comfortable with, as well as a portfolio of work I am proud of.
Aspirations In the next few years I plan to gain my experience in
life, with plans to travel and work on personal projects that will give
me the opportunity to improve and experiment with my portfolio as
well as see the world.

1 Looking at the bigger picture also means that you should look at
things from different views. This brief made me explore my
hometown in Norway. By using Final Cut Express I created a video
that shows Norway and the small towns from a different view.
2 With the word horror comes many clichés. Not being allowed to
use any of the clichés when I made posters for a horror film festival
made me work with text and textures instead, using Photoshop CS
and InDesign CS. Trying to create the feeling of horror – and I did it!
3 An E4 sting is trying to be funny, a bit too funny in my opinion.
That’s why I wanted to experiment with something new. Using Final
Cut Express and some creativity this ended up being an indent that
just contains my experimental collages.
Reflections I was excited and nervous: a new country, a new
culture and new people - it turned out to be quite a journey, but I’ve
loved it. This journey has made me more confident as an artist and
stronger as a person. It has opened my eyes and expanded my
creativity: I can now see the bigger picture.
Aspirations Being a graphic designer isn’t enough from me. I want
more and I want it all. That’s why I’m heading for an MA in Business
and Administration. This, including the degree in Graphic
Communication will give me the opportunities to explore
the bigger picture.

1 This design was influenced by the book 'One more kiss.' I
particularly liked the way the designer had used the grid to create a
visually attractive design. I tried to combine imagery and type to
create a simple but effective layout, each time considering the
subject 'all in the mind.'
2 The aim for this design was to create a lively, exciting and vibrant
representation of a 'fizzy drink.' I tried to show this using appropriate
colours, bubbles, stripes and stars. I also tried to repeat the use of
the crescent and star, as it was the main feature of my logo.
3 The 3D piece was made as part of a branding for my
architectural company 'HEX.' This is to be used as a promotional
piece for the company and sent out to clients to show the type of
work they produce and also the company profile.
Reflections I have really enjoyed studying Graphic Communication,
this is because I have been able to show a range of techniques and
produce a wide variety of work. I have also expanded my use of
both software skills and gained knowledge on the key design
features. I really enjoy the whole experience of designing, from the
basic research right through to the final design.
Aspirations Having, finished University I am keen and enthusiastic
to commence my working life as a designer particularly in branding,
advertising or editorial. I'm really passionate about designing both
small pieces of graphics such as logos to large pieces of work such
as a magazine or a book. I particularly enjoy combining type and
imagery within a grid.

1 This is one of the images I’ve produced for promoting The
National Gallery. Basically my idea was to hire local artists to paint
on public buses, some of the gallery’s best loved paintings. This is a
Birmingham bus following the daily routes as normal with
passengers going in and out the bus.
2 This is a double page spread I produced for Promo magazine.
We’ve been asked to design layouts based on music, dance and
generally culture. I decided to use a strong magenta colour bacause
is very lively, vivid colour and also one of my favourites.
Furthermore, I wanted to give a dynamic aspect in my design by
not having large amount of text on a page.
3 This is a poster for advertising the Sugar Free Evoca Cola. The
product aims to all ages in Europe and Middle East. I wanted my
design to show freshness and liveliness but also high quality. For
that reason I used bright colours and the illustration also shows
activeness which is equal to a healthy attitude.
Reflections Throughout my three years at the University of
Wolverhampton, I feel I have improved my knowledge for Graphic
Design. I’ve gained knowledge in a range of softwares but
especially in Quark XPress, Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign,
which now helps me improve my work. I enjoyed beeing in the
University of Wolverhampton and now I feel more confident
about my self.
Aspirations After completing my degree, my aim is to take and
complete a postgraduate degree focusing on Design Management.
Then I would like to get a job in the graphic design industry
combining graphics, editorial and advertising. Ultimately, I would like
to teach Graphic Design and Art generally in a Hiigh School in
Cyprus, where I come from.

1 This is a letterhead and business card I designed for a fictional
publisher. I was reading Prozac Nation by Elizabeth Wurtzel at the
time of this brief and decided that I wanted my publishers to be the
kind of company that dealt with books which were similar to this
gritty controversial autobiography. I used a real manual typewriter
and ink to achieve this look of an emotional authors frustration.
2 This was a live brief taken on by my year for the Regenerating
Buildings Preservation Trust. They wanted an identity for a project
they were doing of restoring a Georgian house to its former glory.
This was a poster I designed for the open day. I used a small blown
up section of a Georgian textile design I found and layered it in
typically Georgian colours.
3 This is a double page spread taken from a magazine design brief
my year did. It is a life style publication featuring articles about art,
entertainment, food etc. I wanted it to have a visually fun and classy
feel to it, in keeping with the subject matter.
Reflections Starting my degree at the age of 26 was the best
decision I have ever made. It has been a real roller coaster of ups
and downs but I am proud of my achievements and for getting
through the downs with a heightened determination to earn a living
from the subject I love – Graphic design.
Aspirations I look forward to progressing my design skills and
becoming a valuable member of a design studio. After years of
being a student it will be nice to have some routine in my life and be
able to plan for the future; I’d like to buy a barge to live on.

1 The brief for this project was to create a new corporate identity
system for an architectural company. The cube shape and the fonts
that I used to design the logo were to match the name of the
this company.
2 This poster is designed to promote the chocolate festival in the
of the festival. Everything in the campaign had fancy looks in order
to grab the kids’ attention.
3 A Georgian style of logo and photographic exhibition poster
were designed to promote 12 George Street, a Georgian grade II
aimed at the public.
Reflections In retrospect, the two years of studying in the
2 A selection of screen shot from a web page designs for graphic
the idea of using colors to represent bringing new life
1 This image represents Wolverhampton; I have used positive
images that promote Wolverhampton In order to attract people to
the city. The image relies a great deal on the viewers Imagination;
the viewer should be able to see the letter W emerges.
2 George Street Web Page: The brief stated that George Street
had an existing web site that needed to be redesigned; I have
chosen this image because it shows variations within my designs.
3 George Street Poster: The brief stated that 12 George Street
had to be promoted because the building was being restored.
I have chosen this poster because it shows that I can apply designs that
relate to the concept effectively.
Reflections I have learnt a great deal studying Graphic
Communication it is based on problem solving that is at the core of
graphic design. I didn’t relies how important Graphic design was
until I began studying it is something that you see everyday in the
environment it is all about communicating with people. Graphic
designers have to decode designs in order for the viewer to
understand it.
Aspirations I aim to find a job in graphic design and look work
experience to gain more knowledge on this profession, would like to
work freelance and open my own company. I am also planning to
enrol on a web design course in order to broaden my horizons. I
have also contemplated becoming a teacher.

1 To create, brand and advertise a chocolate festival showcasing
products from around the globe. My identity and logo was inspired
from the origins of chocolate, the cacao seed and the plant from
which it came. Using an appetizing colour palette and dynamic
photography I have created strong marketing material.
2 To promote The National Gallery. Imagine visiting the National
Gallery when you went shopping. Viewing your favourite
masterpieces in your local city. Would anyone believe you weren’t
really there, not if you had a souvenir and photographic evidence.
My idea was to capture the public within the masterpiece.
3 Create E-stings for the increasingly popular E4 channel. By
thinking outside the box, opening my mind to the infinite possibilities
and exploring many potential concepts, I have come up with and
produced three very different outcomes, which would look at home
being played in-between programmes on this contemporary channel.
Reflections I am amazed at the rate my work has improved, I have
and my eye, become increasingly critical. I am finishing university full
enthusiasm, I wish to initiate my own design firm once I have gained
1 I chose this image because its quite different to the rest of the
work I've done this year and I thinks its quiet unique looking as a
piece on its own. I particularly like its as both spreads work well
together i.e. the red colours on the left hand page and the green on
the right.
2 This was a piece I produced before Christmas just gone and its
one of my favourites. It reminds me of summer holidays when I was
younger in Spain, its also very uplifting and cheerful which was why
I chose it also.
3 This book spread was chosen pretty much for the same reasons
as IMAGE 1 because it’s rather unusual and visually interesting its
part of the same section of the book as IMAGE 1.
Reflections Its being a lot of fun especially coming to England to
get my degree, I could have stayed in Ireland and got my degree
there but deciding to come here has given my a different angle on
design and I may not have learned some of the things that I've
learned here back home so no regrets at all and there's possibly
more job options here also.
Aspirations I have a small design job lined up back in Ireland so
really looking forward to that but in the long-term I basically want to
keep improving and making my way up the design ladder.

duplicating and filling the screen in a 10 second clip, as if to say it’s
like Scrubs, ER and Nip/Tuck.
2 This is one of three Wolverhampton Horror Film Festival posters I
designed, which promotes the 1983 film The Dead Zone directed
by David Cronenberg. The film is about a man who can see
fragments of the future and I used this to create the title with broken
up shapes.
3 This is an open day poster I designed for a Georgian property. It
is part of an identity I created for 12 George Street in
Wolverhampton that was recently refurbished. The design is based
around the old Georgian floral patterns and the new, vibrant colours
and shapes in contemporary designs.
Reflections During my time at university I have enjoyed working on
different projects such as; designing magazines, books and
newsletters to company branding, advertisement posters and
designing for events. My influence palette has broadened much more,
which in turn gives me more of an appreciation for the work I do.
Aspirations University has given me a chance to discover what I
enjoy best. I feel that my original ideas and skills in the design
process will get me a job in identity branding and or advertisement.
These are areas I would like to explore and hopefully one day be
1 This was a typographical based brief, advertising a horror film
festival. I thought of a tag line I felt would work well on my posters.
From this I used words relating to horror to create a texture for my
background. I chose to use obvious horror colours to represent
the theme.
2 I wanted a high quality feel for the magazine, aimed at many
people, as well as UN readers. With this in mind I created a
bellyband to display relevant information and so not to lose the
photography. I feel it successfully displays the high quality concept
I chose.
3 This is a page from my Edinburgh Fringe Festival Programme.
Lines were the theme of the book influenced by tartan. I wanted a
light hearted feel, as it was a comedy festival. I created this using
juxta positioning.
Reflections My time at university Well, as much as I have worked
hard, I’ve played hard too. But now it’s time to enter the big wide
world of work, which I’m looking forward to with anticipation.
University has made me much more aware of design, both good
and bad, and has also helped me to criticise my own work.
Aspirations I am eager to put all I have learnt, both at college and
at university finally into practice, and also to learn about the
business and print side of things. I look forward to gaining vital work
experience in graphic and editorial design and to pursue my career
in this field, hopefully working my way up to my own studio and
1 This poster is one of three that I designed for a D and AD brief
advertising a horror film festival. The brief was strict on the posters
avoiding cliche so I opted for a very bauhaus colour pallet and
alignment and taking inspiration from Joost Schmidt’s poster work.
2 This is my design for an iconic image for the promotion of
Wolverhampton. I focused on the local area being called the ‘black
country’ and played on the idea of making the word colourful to
represent the areas vibrancy. It is a very bold outcome which I think
represents the area well.
3 This piece of artwork was designed for the cover of an invite to
the end of year show at our University. There were no specific
guidlines for the approach so I wanted to show my technical skills
whilst also focusing on a much loved passion of mine, music.
Reflections Graphic design has been a large part of my life over
the past few years and University has helped me gain the
experience I need to feel confident about presenting a successful
piece of work.
Aspirations I hope to set up a successful career from the skills I
have gained through my education. I think it is important that you
should be in a job that you love and as a result of all the hard work
this will be possible.

of The National Gallery. My final concept was to take paintings from
restaurants up and down the country, effectively making these
premises the new The National Gallery.
2 E-sting: This is a screen shot taken from one of three E-sting
projects designed for the E4 television channel. I’ve used an 80’s
retro game theme as my style. This screen shot is taken from my
flash animation inspired by ‘Space Invaders’ where the invading
aliens are substituted by the E4 logo.
3 The Metamorphosis: This image is an illustration that I designed
1 This was an assignment for a museum, we had to design a
leaflet, I looked at wide range of colours for ideas. I really enjoyed
experimenting with different styles within the flyer. Where we were
able to use any type of theme. Using attractive colours is an
advantage to make it more eye catching and attractive.
2 This is an example of my editorial work, I had produced a flyer
for the museum, which was called ‘Stirring Memories’. The flyer
have been developed to a high standard which readers will prefer to
read, because of the detailing and the readability.
3 This is a poster for a festival called the ‘Horror movie festival’, we
just had to use word. So I used quotation from the movie and
experiment different types of layouts. I used the colour red, grey
and black to represent death and passion.
Reflections I have really enjoyed my time studying Graphic
Communication here at the University of Wolverhampton. I have
which has helped me define my future aspirations. I have met lots of
1 This is a poster from a re-branding assignment for EVOCA cola. We
were given the task of a “re-brand” however we were only able to
tweak the original design. We also had to produce branding for their up
coming lemonade, mineral water, orangeade and sugar free products.
2 Here is a section from an editorial assignment we were set for
the Edinburgh Fringe festival. We were to produce the event listings
and information booklet(s) for the event. Utilizing out typographic
skills to create systems and themes to make the information easily
accessible and interesting. I produced 4 booklets within a
corresponding slip case.
3 This a page from an editorial book titled “dream and talk”, we were
given the body text and almost free reign on how to approach the look
and feel of the book. The content covered the subjects of colour and
light, so I tried to reflect these genres within my layouts designs.
Reflections Over my time at the University of Wolverhampton, I feel
that I have further defined my individual style, improved technical
abilities and discovered what aspects of design I enjoyed the most,
which happened to be editorial design. I have thoroughly enjoyed
this experience as a whole both academically and socially, having
made some valuable friendships along the way.
Aspirations I hope to become one of the mass employed after so
long in education and gain some valuable experience in the industry.
There are a few avenues that I would like to explore, working within a
large design establishment with career prospects would be top of
my list, starting a business of my own or even teaching and basically
just to see what the subject that I enjoy so much has to offer in all
it’s varied forms.

a magazine on the theme of love, reflecting the breadth and
diversity of what love can mean in different contexts. The
photographic imagery is in black & white but I have used strong
colour to highlight eyes & lips.
2 The brief was to produce a prestigious handmade book to
support & promote the film ‘Hotel Rwanda’ and to encourage
donations for the Rwandan orphans. I found it particularly
challenging to portray the horrific nature of genocide in a book to be
given as a keepsake to V.I.P’s at various premieres.
3 Last summer the University ran a competition to re-brand the
School of Art & Design. This is my winning concept, based on the
abstract image of ink swirling in water. I have used blue and yellow
to reflect the colours in the University of Wolverhampton’s own logo.
Reflections I have really enjoyed my time at University and learnt a
great deal. As a mature student I found it quite daunting to go back
agency, but it has been so worth it!
Aspirations Aspirations I am especially interested in editorial design
Alternatively I would like to further my education by studying for a
2 Biodiesel: This project supposed to inform an eviromental
3 Star Weekly News Magazine: I tried to experience dealing with
1 Here are two double-page-spreads from a booklet designed for
the Edinburgh Festival Fringe. I loved designing this because I made
it lively, colourful & attractive. There was a lot of text involved with
this brief but I felt more confident because the more editorial pieces
I did the better I got.
2 This was one poster, of three, designed to promote a chocolate
festival called ‘Chocolate Meltdown’. It was a graphic branding brief
which was exciting to do, because I also had to design/make a 3D
model festival, along with the three advertising posters. This was my
favourite poster, I decided to design in a dynamic way, using space
with the chocolate balls.
3 Another proud piece of editorial work, this double-page-spread
was liked by colleagues and module lecturers. As it was a difficult
page to arrange – dealing with a lot of small chunks of text. I also
used a lot of cut-out images in the brief to create a dynamic effect.
Reflections Going to University to study graphics was a goal of
mine since high school. Being introduced to the Apple Mac and
various programmes was exciting. Brief by brief my understanding
of graphics grew, these design briefs made me think ‘outside the
box’ and made me question certain design. I have become more
confident in myself and in my work.
Aspirations My next goal is to get into either the Editorial Industry
maybe a magazine company or in the advertising environment,
learning as much as possible and working my way up to the top,
earning large amounts of cash and buying life’s luxuries. Then
maybe find the right business partner and hopefully opening my
layout for their sophisticated level of clarity and readability. I wanted
to achieve a detailed look into editorial design and ways in which
type can be used to enhance the expressive possibilities of visual
information. I created a circle pattern for the design of the
magazine, which I continued inside and on the back cover to
continue the magazines palette.
3 Postage stamps: creating my self-negotiated project was a
challenge to design in such a small space area. I was happy with
the end results as my stamps look like they belong to a set of six
stamps based on the religion Hinduism taken from the theme of
religions and cultural festivals and celebrations.
Reflections The BA (Hons) Graphic Communication course has
helped me to develop areas of my personal interests throughout the
diversity of modules it has incorporated. This has particularly allowed
me to gain a range of qualities, which I will benefit from and will
enhance in the near future.
Aspirations I enjoy all aspects of design, currently being in my final
year at university and will be soon looking for a junior design
position in any Graphics Field and would like to meet other
designers and network more.

1 This photomontage is my interpretation of an old Irish folk story
“The Children of Lir”. I used a combination of many images to create
the overall effect of the children breaking free from a statue on the
shoreline of a lake. All the effects were achieved using Photoshop.
2 This design for an open day poster for 12 George Street, was
created using scanned images of ribbon and hand made leaves in
the background. I then used a floral image from a wallpaper print
and chose to use a traditional Georgian red to keep the design in
context with the identity.
3 This poster is part of a corporate identity created for “Habitat for
Humanity” birdhouse competition. I combined hand rendered
drawings with vector based graphicsand photographs. To complete
the design and to add texture to the image I decided to print onto
hand made paper.
Reflections Studying Graphic Communication at the University of
Wolverhampton has given me a great oppertunity to explore my
creativity as a Graphic Designer. I have learned a great deal about
design and the processes involved that I have applied in creating
my final pieces of work for my portfolio.
Aspirations In the future I hope to further my design education by
studying for a MA in Art & Design. I then hope to work for a Graphic
Design company to gain valueable experience, and a knowledge of
the design industry. I would also like to continue working freelance
on personalized design and Illustration.

Reflections During my stay in Wolverhampton I have realised the
importance of seeking advice from the professionals in the area of
graphic communication. To learn about any area of interest you
must first research and talk to people who have plenty of
experience. Learn from your own and other people’s mistakes.
Aspirations As most graphic/multimedia designers, I hope to work for
an enthusiastic design studio, be it a small independent team, or a
larger, more established firm. I enjoy travelling and meeting new people,
I would like to integrate this into my work, either through working
abroad or freelance. Hopefully, one day setting up my own studio.

studying, I am learning how to survive in a total familiar place as well.
I realized that it is really different when I need to do designing across
cultures. There’s the reason why the 16 hour flight brought me here
from my homecountry. At least I know that it is teaching me to say
‘Wa gua’ instead of saying ‘Hi’.
Aspirations I just want to win myself, as I know most of the time, I
am my own enemy who stops myself of doing what I want to. I
believe that there must be a reason why I was born to be
1 This is an editorial page from my final project, a book titled
“Dream and Talk”. The design is typography based and produced in
monochrome (love black and white!), there is something dynamic in
its purity and simplicity. As well as black and white, I’ve discovered
a love for typography too!
2 For this editorial brief, a lifestyle magazine titled “Promo”, I
wanted to explore other design elements such as different
typefaces, colours and in particular the use of imagery. In editorial, I
have found an area of graphic design in which I would like to make
a career out of.
3 The project was to market brand the redevelopment of 12
George Street into modern flats. The brief gave me an insight into
the many different areas of marketing from point of sale to a website
giving me the opportunity to utilise various skills.
I’ve manage to reach the end. I’m ready to take the next step,
1 Iconic Image project. To create an image that represents the city
and to attract new clients to the up and coming city of
Wolverhampton. I set out by exploring the cities highs and lows
looking for its alternative and unique mannerisms. I documented it
by collecting and taking photos of the strongest points of the city
and collaborating them to unite the cities diverse customs and
relations with the community.
2 Mark twain project. To take the quote, The man who does not
read good books has no advantage over the man who cant read
them. My colleague and myself wanted to create a game to make it
highly interactive. The visuals were based on mark twains collection of
diaries and scrapbooks.
3 Franz Kafka project. I took a modern twist on the story which
questioned my feelings about today’s society and the choices we
make about are life’s situation and ho we blame for what we are,
dealing with relation ships and employment. I questioned weather
we are comfortable The film is created with stop animation in an
abandoned warehouse and develops into interactive world
questioning the double thoughts we have before you sleep.
Reflections I have not only developed valuable skills as a designer
at university but have developed my confidence with applying my
creativity, to briefs and the value of teamwork. But above all
university has enabled me to be happy within my work and my self.
Aspirations I am looking forward to the day where I can earn a
to an open-minded community of designers willing to experiment
3 Part of an interactive piece on the book Fahrenheit 451. The
mysterious girl who speaks of the intricate vibrancy within life. She
acts as a guide, starting from her eye through to all of her senses
as a narrative.
Reflections What I found most fulfilling of this course is meeting
like-minded people. Its not often you mix and work with such a
diverse group of individuals. This in turn has opened my mind to
different opinions, theories and approaches which helped me evolve
as a creative designer. For me, it’s been determination, passion,
Aspirations Creativity stops my imagination feeling stifled. I plan to
others. Illustration was my first love and at the heart of my work. I
also favour multimedia and animation to produce engaging
The quote centres around reading, so I wanted the piece to challenge
the viewer making them read in order to continue. All within a 3D
environment full of texture, constructed using all sorts of materials
from a paper coffee cup to a painting by my three year old son.
2 The Edinburgh Festival Fringe guide. The festival itself is a very
loose free flowing alternative entertainment event. This feel I wanted
to incorporate within the guide, using a strong colour palette and
free flowing design, which was achieved to great effect.
3 An online portfolio with a design based around my home
environment. I wanted to recreate the beauty of my surroundings
using line art, texture from hand painted elements, photographs and
animation. The final piece is very organic and full of texture.
Reflections My time spent on the Graphic Communication course
course have been excellent and I made some friends for life. The
course itself has been very challenging but hugely rewarding,
3 This piece of multimedia work I created for a self-promotion
Reflections I believe I have gained a vast array of knowledge
during my time at University. I have developed as a designer and
have found I look at the world of design in a different light. I have
grown as a person and am looking forward to the future.
Aspirations Having nearly finished one chapter in my life, I believe I
1 For the typographical poster campaign promoting a horror film
festival, I used the tagline as my main imagery. With such a lengthy
word, I chose to use a landscape format for sheer impact. The
colours are picked from images of rust and unsanitary surgical
instruments reflecting the content of the film.
2 Designing stationary for an architecture company I decided on
another format change. With strict guidelines on letterhead sizes,
(A4) I experimented with different formats, all the time ending with
an A4 finished size. The paper folded behind gives the ‘g’ its
ascender, leading you to a brief portfolio of work.
3 In designing e-stings I leant towards music, as research in to the
company proved E4 were doing the same. I chose artists that have
both stood the test of time and been inducted into the rock and roll
hall of fame. The main thing for me was the music having surreal yet
tangible imagery.
Reflections During my time studying graphic communication I feel
that I have learned most from the flexible more conceptual briefs, as
I tend to take a more lateral view of design, considering influence
(particularly of fine art and music) more important than current
trends and shallow aesthetics.
Aspirations I would like a job which I enjoy and find challenging
without being stressful. Doing something, which I agree with
ethically. I also aspire to use my full potential in terms of knowledge
creativity and willingness to learn.

inspired by my joy of silhouettes and the outdoors. Whether playing
sports or just strolling I always enjoy the shapes created by light on
leaves and branches. This image opposes that people will view this
on a screen indoors.
2 Being interested in movies I was excited about producing typebased
posters. This picture is part of a type as image I created. I
felt colour was important so I used browns and cyan to represent
the gruesomeness of horror films. Poster formats combined to
create an axe shape.
3 This still frame is of an animation I created for the E4 E Stings
Competition 2007. My concept was that on a snowy day a small
robin flies in and cleverly rolls up a snowball. Cheekily he throws it
at the screen (towards viewer) revealing E4’s logo upon impact.
1 This is part of an editorial project for my final year at university
that entailed designing representative pages and a front cover for a
magazine that visually reflects a synergy of image, type and sound
echoing the breadth and diversity that is part of our 21th century
contemporary culture. Inspiration: loudspeakers and sound.
2 I redesigned the logo for this new soft drink brand to be
launched soon and created its poster with a good balance of light,
colour, fun, illustrations as well as elegance which will give
customers a sense of respect and a high opinion of the product
once it is launched.
3 Fun and liveliness were my main approaches to this editorial
project which consisted of producing a brochure for the Edinburgh
Fringe Festival. The cover was really successful and therefore set
the visual palette for the rest of the pages which were a
combination of humour, irony and happiness.
Reflections The Graphic Communication degree at
Wolverhampton is well organised and prepares graduates for the
professional market. We are exposed to all areas of design
(graphics, editorial, multimedia, web) through the modules. While
some people might narrow their specialisation area, I embraced a
wider approach thus giving me a broader opportunities
in the market.
Aspirations I want to work for a reputed international design and
advertising agency that works on various projects including
graphics, editorial and multimedia and also giving opportunity to
designers to go on research expeditions in different countries and
cultures to better themselves. At a later stage, I want to join politics
in Mauritius.

1 This was my visual response for a type based horror poster. The
brief was to produce 3 horror film festival posters based on
typography. My concept was to represent individual films using
descriptive words. This poster represented the film psycho.
2 An example of the promotional work I produced for a live project
in Wolverhampton.12 George Street is a Georgian style building that
is being renovated into three apartments. I utilised the buildings
Georgian features, such as symmetry, within my designs. My
completed designs gained second place in the live project.
3 An example of one of the drinks labels that I produced for the
Evoca Cola enterprises ltd. Evoca was looking for a redesign for
there existing packaging. I produced a lively and modern design to
appeal to Evoca’s large target audience.
Reflections My time spent studying Graphic communication has
been inspiring, thought provoking and enjoyable. I feel I have
developed my own personal design style and adapt well to new
problems within design. I have become more aware of the mass of
graphics around me and feel that I will leave the course as a good
conceptual thinker ready for the new experiences to come.
Aspirations I see the future as a display of opportunities. I look
forward like many individuals to a fulfilling job that lets me utilise and
develop my design skills further. I will rise to the challenges ahead of
me. And hopefully in return be recognized for doing so.

1 Maria Callas: Before coming to Wolverhampton I had never done
any multimedia and I found the briefs challenging. Interactive e-
cards forced me to handle basic Flash and actionscript while still
keeping the design in focus. I experienced a steep learning curve
and got hooked, continuing with Flash in the second semester.
2 WES: During my last year at Wolverhampton University, I won
the competition to create a new logo and profile for a local supply
company. Wire Electric Supplies wanted something traditional, yet
new and fresher than their old profile. Working with a real client was
a great learning experience for me.
3 Dream & Talk: For my final project I chose to do a book for both
print and screen, in addition I did all the illustrations in Illustrator
myself. This brief made me improve my skills in Illustrator, InDesign
and web-design. I have learned a lot doing this brief and it has
certainly given me more confidence in my skills as a designer.
Reflections I came to Wolverhampton in 2005 and started my
second year of graphics not really knowing what to expect. Travelling
to a new country alone was both thrilling and scary, but I don’t regret
it for a second. I’ve made friends and learned so much, both as a
designer and as a person. It’s been a great couple of years.
Aspirations My future holds a job and a challenge to use and
further improve my creative skills. I will work, meet new people and
expand my knowledge. I want to some day be an AD in a magazine
since editorial design is something I am very passionate about.

1 This was a brief I got from my work experience at Keane
Brands. I had to design a whole new nightclub/bar. I researched
thoroughly and created different ideas to give me a stylish and
sophisticated design.
2 As a keen fan of motor sports I produced two double page
spreads, including text and images about Michael Schumacher. I
based it on him as he was retiring, the sports most illustrious
competitor. My final piece bought out the controversy and best of
what he achieved.
3 Here is an example of my editorial work. I produced part of the
Edinburgh Fringe Festival booklet. I tried to involve the essence of
the Fringe as it a comedy festival in my final piece. It shows humour
and friendliness so the reader can get the feel of the Fringe.
Reflections It has been an enjoyable time at the University of
Wolverhampton. I feel that I have developed my own style and
myself. Interacting with fellow students has given me great friends
and memories, and a better understanding of design. It has been a
good experience.
Aspirations It has always been my ambition to become an
accomplished designer and to give a design a purpose and
originality. I would like to work myself up into the industry to a high
level, with a creative team, to produce distinctive final pieces.

called Dream And Talk. The book is all about colour and light. This
particular spread is called All In the mind, which is all about colour.
The image shows colour and concentration and thinking which
reflects the title.
2 This is a ballet poster designed for a dance festival, which I
named Platinum; I illustrated the figure using a palette knife and
acrylic paint to give it an artistic look. The idea around the text was
to reflect the movement of the figure dance, leading your eyes in
different directions.
3 A package and logo design for a new drinks Brand called
Evoca. Evoca is a new premium cola, which is trying to compete
with coke and Pepsi. My logo design has incorporated a moon
shape, which is part of their original logo. I tried to promote
freshness and great taste with the label design.
Reflections My experience at University studying Graphic
communications has been great, I have enjoyed furthering my
knowledge and skills on Graphic design. As a designer I think I have
progressed really well and worked very hard, which has made me a
determined to get the best out of the industry.
Aspirations For the future my personal goals are to gain as much
experience as possible. My goal is to work for a top Graphic Design
Company. Later on in life I would like to own my own graphic
design company with my three other friends.

3 This is a photo manipulation assignment I did in my HND course
in Greece. In order to make it, I used many textures and a photo of
a naked woman. I combined them and by using my imagination I
had this result.
Reflections Studying “Design for Multimedia” here in
Wolverhampton, gave me a better idea on how I have to organize
and do my work. I believe that my imagination became bigger and
that’s one of the things I wanted to achieve in order to become a
better designer.
designer and to be able to create my own web design company
after five years from now!

1 A visual Identity for a regenerated building in Wolverhampton. My
main focus was to keep the atmosphere from the Georgian era, and
bring it up to date. I kept a Georgian palette, and modernized
patterns found in Georgian wallpaper. The type is kept simple
juxtaposed to the complex design element.
2 A brochure for the Edinburgh Fringe festival. Since they are
celebrating their 60th anniversary I wanted to elaborate some of the
style from earlier decades, I landed on the colorful and optimistic
60s. I have kept the décor elements to a minimum, this to get the
main focus on the typography.
3 Promo magazine. My main approach to this magazine was to
create a delicate yet urban magazine, suited for people on the run.
An experiment in exciting and interesting typography.
Reflections My aim during my study was to learn the basics within
the. But it thought me so much more. Such as multiple working
processes, different solutions and approaches to assignments and
multi cultural influences. Design is so much more than just
production, it is creation.
Aspirations I want to experience and try out different areas within
the graphic world, to get an understanding of the wholeness and
diversity. Try to experiment and develop my own language and style.
Always keep my mind open to new learning and development.

2 Seeing good and evil. HND project: Combination of Graphic &
1 The brief was to create ‘un-cliché’ typographic based posters for
a horror film festival. I chose an ‘un-obvious’ approach and used
un-conventional colours and layers to create this look. I feel I
created the approach successfully as the viewer needs to approach
the poster to learn the subject.
2 This is part of my Edinburgh Fringe Festival programme design.
It is one of my favourite designs, working on something ‘real’ helped
visualise and create the design successfully. Arrows are the theme,
my design included arrow shaped post-its as handy bookmarks. I
wanted a contemporary feel, representing the festival.
3 This poster is part of the branding for a house regeneration
project. I combined georgian qualities with modern style,
representing the house. I used modern swirls and georgian colours
to create the components. I felt I had created something quite
different and my design wasshort listed to the final six.
Reflections I have very much enjoyed my time doing graphic
communication. My skills have developed allowing me to realise
how much I enjoy typographic design. My confidence in my work
has greatly increased over the three years and however scary it may
seem, I do feel ready to join the world of work.
Aspirations In the future I hope for a job that makes me happy, as
I am sure most people do but creating design that is exciting and
thought provoking to other people would make me very happy.

Reflections What I found most fulfilling of this course is meeting
like-minded people. Its not often you mix and work with such a
diverse group of individuals. This in turn has opened my mind to
Aspirations I wish to work with like-minded people, to give and
groundbreaking and joyfully fulfilling. I wish to experiment in new
areas, creative in all approaches. These are three wishes I would
