Effective Consultation
THE ART OF CONSULTATION
Step 1: Consent Form Signed
Consent form must be signed by parent or guardian before consultation can proceed
Roadblock # 1:
The consent form is signed, yet staff state that they are unsure about whether or not
they will keep the child in the program.
Strategy:
Consultant tells the centre that a decision must be made before consultation can begin.
Roadblock # 2:
The parent has refused to sign the consent form, yet the centre has asked you to come in.
Strategy:
The consultant observes the program and offers general program suggestions that may
be helpful. Confidentiality is maintained – the name of the child in question is never
revealed.
Step 2: Initial Contact With The Childcare / School
Gather / Clarify Relevant Background Information
Helpful information may include
age of the child
length of time the child has been enrolled in the program
family composition and lifestyle
significant events or changes in the child’s life
Work With The Consultee To Define The Problem
