Attachment<br />

May use a formal tool such as Transdisciplinary Play-Based Assessment that can<br />

assist in assessing the level of pretend play, and will explore the child’s level of<br />

socialization with other children.<br />

It is also encouraged to complete a developmental assessment of the child. It is common for<br />

children with attachment disorders to also experience developmental delays. This information<br />

will inform the treatment plan developed.<br />

It will also be necessary to assess parental history, mental status, and current<br />

functioning. The following interviews and questionnaires can be used:<br />

The Adult Attachment Interview (AAI)<br />

Adult Attachment Q-Sort<br />

Working Model of the Child Interview (WMCI)<br />

Attachment History(AHQ)<br />

Mother-Father-Peer Scale<br />

The treatment of attachment disorders generally focus on:<br />

The parent-child relationship<br />

The child<br />

Interventions focused on the parent-child relationship include:<br />

Interactional Guidance Using Videotape Viewing (Developed by Susan McDonough, 1995)<br />

Successful with high risk parents<br />

Includes videotaping interactions and reviewing the tape with the parent and discussing<br />

both positive and negative interactions<br />

The video is approximately 10 to 20 minutes in length<br />

Probing questions are used to facilitate discussion<br />

interaction and the attachment relationship between parent-child<br />
