infrastructure. The $215 million Stage Two will be the underground mine development. Over the life<br />
of the mine annual output is expected to be 0.8 Moz of gold and 28 000 t copper. By the end of<br />
2003 construction was on schedule and budget.<br />
Barrick Gold’s Cowal project, near West Wyalong, NSW, with a reserve of 66.4 Mt at 1.18 g/t Au<br />
(2.8 Moz), received approval to proceed to develop the open-pit project. Production is expected to<br />
average 270 000 oz/annum over the first decade. The company was granted a Mining Lease in June<br />
2003 and work is on target for the first production in 2006.<br />
Giants Reef Mining poured the first gold from its Chariot project near Tennant Creek, NT. The<br />
operation will mine 125 000 tpa of ore and produce around 60 000 oz/annum of gold at cash costs<br />
of around A$230/oz, with current reserves giving it a four-year mine life. Also in the Northern<br />
Territory, Renison Consolidated Mines NL reported that the first gold from its Quest 29 mine near<br />
Pine Creek was poured in September 2003.<br />
Newcrest Mining Ltd and Sedimentary Holdings Ltd signed the mining joint venture documents<br />
allowing the start of construction of the Cracow gold project 2 km west of Cracow, Qld. The capital<br />
cost of the project is A$89 million, and the first gold production is expected in December <strong>2004</strong>.<br />
Dominion Mining Ltd announced that it will proceed with the development of an underground mine<br />
at its Challenger gold project in the Gawler Craton, SA, where open cut production commenced in<br />
2002. Subject to gaining regulatory approvals development is scheduled for March <strong>2004</strong>, with the first<br />
ore to be reached in September <strong>2004</strong>.<br />

Perseverance Corp Ltd completed a bankable feasibility study into the development and mining of<br />
the sulphide <strong>resources</strong> at Fosterville near Bendigo, Vic. The A$75 million project will include openpit<br />
and underground mines and a treatment plant with an annual capacity to mine and treat 800 000 t<br />
of refractory ore. Production is planned to start in the December quarter <strong>2004</strong>.
