Practice ACT for all Juniors All juniors enrolled in Illinois public high schools are required to participate in the ACT and WorkKeys testing program, known collectively as the Prairie State Achievement Examination (PSAE), on April 25 and 26, 2012. Whether students are considering attending a four-year university, a community college, entering a vocational training program, work force or the military, these tests will play a key role in determining the choices available to them. John Hersey High School is committed to helping students fulfill their highest academic potential during high school and in their post-secondary experiences. As part of this commitment, we are providing all juniors with the opportunity to take a practice ACT test on Wednesday, March 21, beginning at 7:30 a.m. This free practice test will be administered in the Carter Gym at John Hersey High School. From 7:30 a.m. until 11:50 a.m., students will take a complete ACT, including the writing test, in conditions similar to those they will experience in April on the state required test date. After lunch, students will meet with their counselor and complete the registration materials for the PSAE. Since this testing will take the entire day, there will be no regularly scheduled classes for juniors on March 21. After the tests are scored, each student will receive a copy of his/her test result. We will also conduct test preparation activities in classes during the week prior to the PSAE state testing in order to ensure each student’s maximum performance. Reviews will be based on the March 21 test results. It is essential that all juniors report to the Carter Gym promptly by the regular start time of 7:30 a.m. Juniors should bring several sharpened #2 pencils (no mechanical pencils) and a calculator to the practice test. I am confident that you will support our efforts to help in making this day meaningful for your student. Doing well on the PSAE will not only help students make wise post-secondary choices, but the results will also help in senior placement decisions. Please encourage your student to be well rested and to eat a nourishing breakfast before the practice test, and make sure s/he arrives at school on time. Graduation Information Graduation Tickets... It’s not too early to start thinking about the Graduation Ceremony for the Class of 2012. This year’s Commencement will take place on Sunday, June 3, at 12:30 p.m. in the gymnasium. As has been our policy, EACH SENIOR FAMILY WILL BE GIVEN FOUR TICKETS TO GRADUATION. Extra tickets will be available on a very limited basis. IN MOST CASES, NO FAMILY WILL RECEIVE MORE THAN 6 TICKETS. The number of tickets you receive will depend upon the number of requests for extra tickets. We cannot guarantee the number of tickets you request. However, we will have additional tickets for those who would like to view the ceremony via closed circuit TV in the theater. In order to facilitate the needs of families, we are trying to do the ticket allocation early this year. Therefore, if you are going to request extra tickets, please have your son or daughter sign up in the Main Office from Monday, March 5, through Friday, March 16. PLEASE DO NOT CALL TO SIGN UP FOR EXTRA TICKETS. You must have someone come in to the Hersey Main Office to sign up. Extra tickets will be allocated in an equitable manner, not on a first-come/first-served basis, so it does not matter when you sign up during this two-week period. A list of the ticket allocation will be posted in the Main Office by WEDNESDAY, APRIL 4. We believe this will allow you enough time to make arrangements with family and guests for graduation. THE ACTUAL TICKETS WILL NOT BE DISTRIBUTED UNTIL GRADUATION PRACTICE ON FRIDAY, JUNE 1. You are, however, guaranteed to receive the number of tickets that will be posted. We ask that you wait to make plans until this list comes out so that you know how many tickets you are going to receive. Auditions for graduation performances (speeches, songs, poems, etc.) will be held on Tuesday, April 10 and Wednesday, April 11. Students wishing to audition need to sign up in the Main Office the same dates as sign-ups for tickets. Students should come to auditions with a finished product.
