Hersey Students place nationally in US Cyber Challenge.
This past fall District 214 had over 30 students participate in the US Cyber Challenge. This new nationally
based competition is web based, involving Network Fundamentals, Operating Systems and System
Administration. Nate Gramer of John Hersey High School was recognized as a state champion in the
competition. Nate won a $250 VISA card as the State Champion.
Students were given access to web based curriculum which uses youtube videos and other web based
curricula to introduce students to Networking concepts, Windows, Linux and Unix operating systems and
programming languages like PERL, JAVA and GNU BASH. The goal of the competition is to expose
students to the tools needed to become a Network Security Specialist. Instructors in the Computer Repair
and Cisco Networking programs worked through the material, attempting to fit lessons and material into
their regular computer curriculum.
The US Cyber Foundations Competition is the entry-level competition in a series of increasingly challenging
contests sponsored by U.S. Cyber Challenge (USCC). USCC was chartered to identify and nurture
America’s best and brightest who can become the future cyber policy leaders, cyber guardians and cyber
warriors for United States companies, government agencies, and military services.
