During the year our National Guard served with distinction and honor providing for the defense of our nation, the fight on the continuing war on terrorism, and performing vital service to our citizens and state. Since 9/11 West Virginia has deployed over 20,000 soldiers and airmen to over 100 countries. We continue to be recognized as one of the best military organizations in the world. This year the West Virginia National Guard won first place in the 2008 Army National Guard Communities of Excellence competition and its $750,000 top prize. We are the lead agency for the Department of Homeland Security and the Defense Contract Management Agency for critical infrastructure protection of our defense industrial base, and our Joint Interagency Training and Education Center is recognized as a national asset for homeland security. Your leadership and support has enabled us to succeed and we look forward to another year of service to our state and nation.
