Anthropology (ANT)<br />
ANT 111 Introduction to Cultural Anthropology (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />
instructor’s permission. Introduction to study of<br />
human cultural diversity. Includes sub-fields of<br />
anthropology, sub-disciplines and topics, historical<br />
origins, influences, key figures, theory and methods,<br />
and an introduction to the comparative study of<br />
cultures. The course emphasizes the general<br />
education special requirements of ethnic/race gender<br />
awareness (ERG).<br />
ANT 112 Human Origins & Biological<br />
Anthropology (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />
instructor’s permission. A survey of evolutionary<br />
theory and its application to the study of human<br />
origins and biological evolution.<br />
ANT 201 Ethnographic Methods (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />
instructor’s permission. Introduces students to<br />
methods of conducting research into human cultures<br />
and provides guidance and supervision as students<br />
actually conduct research in the community on an<br />
aspect of Navajo life.<br />
ANT 210 Ancient Societies in Prehistoric Times (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment, or<br />
instructor’s permission. An exploration of prehistoric<br />
human societies and cultures throughout the world<br />
based on archaeological studies of the remains of<br />
ancient dwellings, ceremonial sites, and artifacts<br />
(HA).<br />
ANT 215 Expressive Navajo Culture (3)<br />
Prerequisites: NAV 101 or instructor’s permission. A<br />
survey of linguistic anthropology about the<br />
understanding of languages and cultures including<br />
language loss, and the maintenance and preservation<br />
of languages with emphasis on improving and<br />
developing communication skills and understanding<br />
of Navajo culture. Introduces and develops topics on<br />
verbal, visual dramatic, musical and cultural arts as<br />
aesthetic expressions. Taught in Navajo.<br />
ANT 225 Indians of the United States and North<br />
America (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment, or<br />
instructor’s permission. Cross listed with NIS 225. A<br />
survey of the indigenous groups of the U.S. and<br />
Canada with emphasis on changing economic and<br />
political forces that influence various tribal groups.<br />
Discussion of origins, language, arts, and habitats.<br />
ANT 250 Principles of Archaeology (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />
instructor’s permission. An introduction to the history<br />
of archaeological research and survey of concepts<br />
and methods in the study of prehistoric cultures with<br />
an emphasis on modern theories and techniques.<br />
ANT 265 Archaeology of the Southwest (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />
instructor’s permission. A survey of the prehistory of<br />
the American Southwest from the Pleistocene to the<br />
Spanish historical period. An emphasis on the<br />
prehistoric cultures of Arizona and New Mexico<br />
(ERG and HA).<br />
Art History (ARH)<br />
ARH 211 Survey of Native American Art (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Reading proficiency; ENG 101 or<br />
instructor’s permission.<br />
Provides an overview and develops an appreciation<br />
of Native American Art through both historical and<br />
contemporary perspectives. This course emphasizes<br />
the general education special requirements of<br />
ethnic/race/gender awareness (ERG).<br />
ARH 213 Survey of World Art, Prehistoric to 1500<br />
(3)<br />
Prerequisite: Reading proficiency plus ENG 101 or<br />
instructor’s permission. Provides major knowledge<br />
and appreciation of Western and Eastern Art from the<br />
Prehistoric Age until the 1500s. This course<br />
emphasizes the general education special<br />
requirements of intensive writing/critical thinking<br />
and ethnic/race/gender awareness (IW/CI and ERG).<br />
ARH 214 Survey of World Art, 1500 to Present (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Reading proficiency plus ENG 101 or<br />
instructor’s permission. Provides major know-ledge<br />
and appreciation of Western and Eastern Art from<br />
1500 to contemporary art movements. This course<br />
emphasizes the general education special<br />
requirements of intensive writing/critical thinking<br />
