Foundation Studies (FST)<br />

FST 100 <strong>College</strong> Success Skills (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Placement Tests or instructor’s<br />

permission. Offers an opportunity for students to<br />

improve their study habits and learn basic study skills<br />

necessary for success in college. Includes practice in<br />

note taking, test taking skills, time management and<br />

use of library. Practical application of study skills<br />

emphasized. Explores variety of resources available<br />

to college students. Begins career options<br />

exploration.<br />

FST 101 Language Skills (3)<br />

Introduces beginning students to the scope of the<br />

discipline of communication. Offers the development<br />

of skills, attitudes and understandings that aid the<br />

individual in various communication situations.<br />

Offers students an opportunity to improve writing<br />

skills, making presentations, participating in<br />

discussion and working in groups. Focuses on active<br />

listening and speaking techniques, as well as writing<br />

skills.<br />

FST 129 Foundations of Reading I (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Placement test. Introduces a variety of<br />

reading skills and strategies, focusing on literal<br />

comprehension. Reading selections reflect precollege-level<br />

reading demands. Readings include<br />

topics related to <strong>Diné</strong> life and culture. (IP grade<br />

applicable.)<br />

FST 130 Foundations of Reading II (3)<br />

Prerequisite: FST 129 or placement test. Reinforces a<br />

variety of reading skills and strategies. Reading<br />

selections reflect pre-college-level reading demands.<br />

Readings include topics related to <strong>Diné</strong> life and<br />

culture. (IP grade applicable.)<br />

FST 131 Advanced Reading (3)<br />

Prerequisite: FST 130 or placement test. Stresses<br />

higher order cognitive skills through critical reading<br />

and comprehension. Competencies to be mastered<br />

include expressing implied main ideas, recognizing<br />

biased language, distinguishing between fact and<br />

opinion, locating supporting evidence and utilizing a<br />

reading/study method. Emphasis placed on Native<br />

American reading materials. (IP grade applicable.)<br />

FST 133 Applied Communications I (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Placement test. Designed for students<br />

who need to master basic communications skills<br />

necessary for college courses and/or their chosen<br />

vocational fields. Emphasizes basic English grammar<br />

and sentence structure. (IP grade applicable.)<br />

FST 141 Peer Tutor Training (3)<br />

Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission. Designed to<br />

train students to help other students with academic<br />

problems. Includes tutoring techniques, interpersonal<br />

relations, decision making and study skills. Students<br />

wishing to take this course must excel in at least one<br />

academic subject. Students may be able to begin<br />

tutoring during the first semester.<br />

FST 142 Peer Tutor Practicum (3)<br />

Prerequisite: FST 141 or instructor’s permission. A<br />

seminar course designed to expand the peer tutor’s<br />

knowledge and experience through tutoring and<br />

analysis of tutoring problems. Guest speakers may<br />

explore pertinent topics and students will keep a log<br />

of their tutoring experiences and reactions.<br />

FST 144 Human Relations (3)<br />

Examination and application of basic interpersonal<br />

communication skills. Investigation and examination<br />

of attitudes, behavior, and cultural influences that<br />

affect job and school performance. Offers structured<br />

situations in which to explore interpersonal<br />

relationships and communication skills. The course is<br />

open to students in education, the health fields, and<br />

all others who wish to explore the dynamics of<br />

getting along with people. Students in the<br />

AAS/Office Administration, AAS/Business<br />

Management and Office Technology Certificate<br />

Programs should take the course as BUS 144.<br />

Geology (GLG)<br />

GLG 101 Indigenous Physical Geology (4)<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 100B, FST 131, and MTH 051 or<br />

instructor’s permission. High school chemistry or<br />

physics is recommended. Basic principles of geology<br />

and applications of chemistry and physics to<br />

geological problems with an emphasis on the geology<br />

of the Navajo Nation and geologic topics of<br />

significance to Navajo people. Rocks, minerals,<br />

regional landforms and structures, Earth processes,<br />

Earth systems, and geologic time. Three hours lecture<br />

and three hours laboratory. Includes field studies and<br />

possible weekend fieldtrips.<br />

GLG 102 Historical Geology (4)<br />

Prerequisite: GLG 101. Application of geologic<br />

principles to the interpretation of Earth history and
