Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />

instructor’s permission. Examines minority and<br />

dominant group relations in the U.S. Explores<br />

patterns of prejudice and discrimination against race<br />

and ethnic minorities, assimilationist policies of the<br />

American government, their impact on American<br />

Indians, and the Navajo experience. Emphasizes the<br />

general education special requirements of intensive<br />

writing/critical thinking and ethnic/race/gender<br />

awareness (IW/CI and ERG).<br />

SOC 210 Deviant Behavior (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />

instructor’s permission. Examines behavior not<br />

accepted or approved in the society in which it<br />

occurs. Considers methods by which deviant<br />

behavior is studied, as well as theories of deviancy<br />

offered by sociologists, anthropologists, and<br />

psychologists. The course may focus on Navajo<br />

drinking behavior in its normative and deviant forms.<br />

It emphasizes the general education special<br />

requirements of ethnic/race/gender awareness (ERG).<br />

SOC 215 Native American in American Society (3)<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />

instructor’s permission. A general review of current<br />

living conditions, roles, statuses, and images of<br />

American Indians. Analyzes social and cultural<br />

change and conflict. Examines the growth of urban<br />

indigenous groups and their adjustments to<br />

urbanization, as well as the social, economic and<br />

political achievements of the Southwestern Indians.<br />

SOC 217 Marriage and Family in a Changing Society<br />

theories of criminal development, types of offenders,<br />

Prerequisite: ENG 101 or concurrent enrollment or<br />

instructor’s permission. Examination of the unequal<br />

distribution of power, resources, income, and life<br />

chances in society. The courses analyzes economic<br />

and social classes, racism, ethnic stratification,<br />

colonialism within the U.S., gender stratification, and<br />

the changing position of women in society. It reviews<br />

the effects of poverty on individuals and<br />

communities. The course emphasizes the general<br />

education special requirements of ethnic/race/gender<br />

SWO 111 Social Work as a Vocation (1)<br />

Examines ego psychology as it is applied in social<br />

Continuation of SWO 111. Offers an introduction to<br />

values, ethics, skills, and knowledge pertaining to<br />

social work. Emphasis is on social systems theory.
