ENG 234 Literature of the Southwest (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENG 102. A survey of selected works<br />
by Southwest authors in a variety of genres to<br />
promote appreciation and understanding of this<br />
multicultural region. This course emphasizes the<br />
general education special requirements of intensive<br />
writing/critical thinking and ethnic/race/gender<br />
awareness (IW/CI and ERG).<br />
ENG 241 Media Journalism (4)<br />
Prerequisite: Reading Proficiency plus ENG 101 or<br />
instructor’s permission. This is an inter-disciplinary<br />
course designed to help students survey the various<br />
fields of print media journalism and to acquire the<br />
skills needed to recognize, develop, and write<br />
different kinds of news stories. Visual reporting and<br />
advertising are explored, as are the ethics of the field.<br />
Students produce a campus newsletter or newspaper<br />
that reflects the journalistic skills acquired in the<br />
class and is printed in both Navajo and English.<br />
Environmental Science and Technology (ENV)<br />
ENV 101 Introduction to Environmental Science (4)<br />
Prerequisite: FST 131, ENG 100B, MTH 011. This<br />
course presents basic information for understanding<br />
environmental problems and making good personal<br />
choices. It surveys sources, types, and effects of<br />
pollutants on the environment and human health as<br />
well as ways to control pollutants and to mitigate<br />
pollutant damage. Special emphasis is on the local<br />
environment and public health issues with the<br />
incorporation of Navajo views of the environment,<br />
science, and health. Students research contemporary<br />
issues of health, diet, consumer products, and<br />
resource management. Three hours lecture and three<br />
hours lab per week.<br />
ENV 160 Introduction to GIS (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Student must be accepted into a<br />
Summer Research Program. Introduction to<br />
Geographic Information System (GIS) software using<br />
the ARCH/INFO program. Covers GIS planning<br />
methods and the uses and analysis of geographic and<br />
attribute data. Requires applications of the GIS for<br />
summer research projects. Includes an introduction<br />
to INFO data commands and the ARCHVIEW<br />
display program. Students must use GIS in a summer<br />
research project and in a final presentation.<br />
ENV 202 Introduction to Environmental Engineering<br />
(4)<br />
Prerequisite: CHM 130 or above plus MTH 100 or<br />
above. Introductory course in controlling pollution.<br />
Basics are presented on water supply and wastewater<br />
treatment, solid and hazardous waste management,<br />
and air pollution control. Environmental laws and<br />
regulations are also covered.<br />
ENV 204 Environmental Planning and Management<br />
(3)<br />
Prerequisite: ENV 101 or instructor’s permission.<br />
Principles of environmental planning for self and<br />
community with emphasis on issues within the<br />
Navajo Nation. Students practice setting goals and<br />
objectives; developing timelines; reviewing planning<br />
documents, policies, and laws; analyzing historical<br />
patterns of development; becoming familiar with soil<br />
surveys, socioeconomic data, and other technical data<br />
used in planning; and planning at least one project<br />
toward maintaining balance in the environment.<br />
Integrates <strong>Diné</strong> concepts of planning.<br />
ENV 210 Solid Waste Management (4)<br />
Prerequisite: CHM 130 or above plus MTH 110 or<br />
above. Introduction to the planning, design and<br />
operation of solid waste collection and disposal<br />
facilities, resource recovery, and waste minimization.<br />
Special emphasis on municipal solid waste on<br />
American Indian reservations.<br />
ENV 214 Water and Wastewater Technology (4)<br />
Prerequisite: CHM 130 or above plus MTH 100 or<br />
above. Introduction to the planning, design, and<br />
operation of a public drinking water treatment and<br />
supply facility, as well as a wastewater treatment and<br />
disposal facility.<br />
ENV 218 Water Resources Technology (4)<br />
Prerequisite: GLG 101 and MTH 110 or above.<br />
Introduction to hydrology, water law, water resources<br />
management, and planning with special focus on the<br />
Navajo Nation.<br />
ENV 230 Environmental Sampling and Monitoring<br />
(4)<br />
Prerequisite: BIO 181 or 182. Principles of geology<br />
and ecology are covered and the course introduces<br />
methods and techniques in environmental sampling<br />
and monitoring for water, air and solids. Three hours<br />
lecture and three hours lab.<br />
ENV 297 Practicum in Environmental Science (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Instructor’s permission. Provides a<br />
practical learning experience in environmental<br />
science. Credit is awarded upon demonstrated
