Summary: Shiko Munakata (1903-1975) was the greatest woodcut artist<br />
of modern <strong>Japan</strong>. Blind in one eye, he won recognition world-wide for<br />
the range and vitality, the profound religious sensibility, of his work. Film<br />
was made in the last years of his life, presenting not only his work but a<br />
unique portrait of the artist himself, his energy and humor, his faith, the<br />
intimate relation between his art and his birthplace in Northern <strong>Japan</strong>.<br />
Shown in detail are: "<strong>Japan</strong> so ancient and beautiful", "<strong>The</strong> ten disciples<br />
of Buddha" and "Women tranported by joy" (Grand Prix, São Paulo<br />
Biennial, 1955), "Chronicles of the miseries of Tohoku". Final scene<br />
shows Munakata returning to Aomori for the annual Nebuta festival, the<br />
color and energy of which had inspired his own style.<br />
