The film remains faithful to the text while transplanting the play into Tokyo of the Edo period, a setting which is deliberately ironic because it is a period that is usually romanticised by the Japanese. The film focuses on a slum tenement where prostitutes, actors, gamblers and thieves bewail their lot in life. Osugi, the landlady, fights with her sister, Okayo, over the man they both desire, the thief Sutekichi. Rating: OFLC rating: PG, including Mild violence. Summary: "In 1887, the Japanese culture is insulted by American military imperialists. Against this backdrop of hostility to the Japanese population, a frail rickshaw driver being assaulted by an American sailor is saved when Judo master Sanshiro steps in.
