Summary: Koken are the stage assistant in Kabuki performance.<strong>The</strong>y are<br />

usualy dressed in black with a face covering to give th eillusion of<br />

invisibility. This documentary is a tribute to their skill and art. <strong>The</strong> Koken<br />

are responsible for a large variety of tasks such as prop placemet, customs<br />

and sets. <strong>The</strong>y have to remain calm at all times and often must crouch for<br />

long period on the stage without moving. In more stylized drama they<br />

will appear in formal attrie and sometimes can have lines or small voval<br />

parts in s performance. Kabuki has had an infuluence on theater<br />

throughout the world and the role of Koken has been included in overseas<br />

productions. This documentary consists of several interviews with<br />

experienced Koken and Kabuki actors and lots of footage of Kabuki<br />
